Jacking on the differential

Not that simple. Depends on how the diff is mounted. And a lot of IRS suspensions have aluminum cases and such, never a good idea to jack there.

Every mfgr publishes their jack points, easy to find and follow...
 
Considering I've had my Jeep's Dana 44 balanced on rocks before...yes, I would use the diff to jack it up. That said, I usually pick a shock mount and jack from under there.
 
My cars Are IRS, they manuals say not to jack from the rear differential, but they show acceptable points just behind the diff and front center of the subframe.
 
Both the IRS cars I've had with driven rear wheels have specified the diff as the rear jacking point. I'd be more nervous about it on a solid axle, especially in a heavy vehicle.
