It's hot! 2006 4Runner 4.0 A/C again...

A/C has been charged twice now in the last year, I can see a leak on the condenser toward the top right at a fitting the shop recently removed that bolt (broke it) nd replaced it and the associated O-ring, that lasted a week blowing 48 degrees, now the 'Auto' part of the A/C dial doesn't light up and the system blows hot air at any setting. we will keep the car another 7-10+ years question should I order a new Denso compressor and Denso condenser then have the shop install it along with anything else they feel necessary to update it. or let them piece meal the system repairs on the cheap and risk multiple down times?
 
Is that shop competent to make the required repair(s)? Sounds like they might be rough.

Obviously not the best but a good guy.....A/C up here not a must 99% of days so hard to find specialists..I''m willing to pop for new components Evap? Condenser?, Expansion valve? Compressor I want all Denso new parts, not likely he'd order them as he uses whatever NAPA has on hand if I don't insist on keeping my Toyota a Toyota this guy will totally corrupt my unit with alien parts..I'd like not to re visit this A/C for 5-7 yrs.
 
I was getting 48 degree cold air at best so something is not ideal i suspect.
 
So you guys are saying don't buy new components that after 15 yrs. they should perform once the leak is corrected?
 
Because there’s an electronics problem, I might be inclined to drop it off at the dealer if you’ve got a decent one. Based on the cars in your sig., I’m betting you value quality and job done right. Unless the dealer has a bad rap, I might just go to them and let them go through it. A private guy might get twisted up with the “auto” issue described.
 
The Toyota dealer here is a joke, in the 'Family' since 50+yrs. they don't even have Toyota fluids use a local lubricant distributer only..their market is women who don't shop. Most local Toyota's are purchased 110mi. south in Green Bay. Anyway, tonight I took the 4Runner back to the same guy who filled it twice now for $105 ea. First time last fall he used a dye and that held for quite awhile, this spring I saw a green fluid toward a fitting on the upper right front side of the condenser pointed that out to him a week ago, he tried to remove the bolt but broke it off, blamed corrosion, removed the stub and replaced it along with a O ring gasket, then refilled the freon..I'd bet that didn't take because we lost cold air in a week and I'd bet the safety valve tripped so the compressor wouldn't fry out and that's why the 'Auto' light won't illuminate. I have to watch this guy with my Toyotas cause he just plows ahead and and replaces parts with his NAPA source like when we needed the alternator and battery, almost puked.

Indie repair shop calls me back saying he wants me to order a new condenser and top right discharge hose, stupid hose is as much as the Denso condenser so I searched a source in TX. for the hose at -60% other online prices...$140.00 for both now will see what labor/freon amounts to next week.
 
So the total installing condenser, new discharge hose, reinstalling my oil & ATF coolers and a fresh freon charge came to $286 add the parts $140 = $426.00 total....hope it lasts.

The A/C in my 2007 Tacoma with 239,000 miles still blows ice cold. And that’s down in Tennessee, where I’m likely using it much more than you.

Strange. Wonder if using it more might actually help with longevity.
 
we use a/c often in winter here to defrost...this was corrosion of the discharge pipe joint at top of condenser.
 
AC is one part that the more it is used, the better it runs.
I know it is counter intuitive.

Yes, up north, there is corrosion issues.

In my case, my 2004 Sienna (owned before the one now) had to replace the compressor and condenser.
The clutch seized and squealed.
In my years of owning Toyota since 1986, that is the only one with AC issues.
So, I must have gotten the 1% outlier.
