I don't see anyone else do it either.

As day becomes dusk and it gets too dark to drive without lights, I wait for a place where no cars are around to turn my lights on (opposite at dawn of course).

I can't be the only one that does this because I never see anybody turn their lights on or off on the highway unless they're signalling for some reason. It's like a family secret at my house...we all do it.

Is this something everybody does and just don't talk about it or are we just wierd?....don't worry, I can handle weird.

My car's headlights turn on/off automatically. The photo-sensor rules that car system. I feel lost when getting into a car without it...

To answer your question...I don't do that. I've never really thought about it. BUT, occasionally I do want to 'test' my horn to makes sure it works and will wait until no cars or people are around to do that.

Maybe that's got something to do with it....thinkin' the folks around me might get that momentary "shock" thinking I'm signalling them somehow.

Might also stem from and experience many years ago in my audi fox. It was overheating so, I try to keep it cool by coasting down a long hill with engine off. The lights on the car were tied to the ignition so they went off when i killed the motor and came back on when I switched the ignition back on. A trooper happened to see me do this and, thinking I was signalling other motorists of his presence thus chased me down and gave me a ticket for speeding.....whaddayagonnado?.....no amount of explanation and pleading would convince him of my innocence.

Moral of that story...don't let the police ever see you signalling with your headlights.

And note that in Fl that's an expensive ticket!

If they catch me I'll gladly give unto Caesar what is his. But until then I appreciate the signal from others and will continue to signal to others when I see a speed trap.

Thank God for Flash to Pass headlight systems....no flashing brake lights!

Why would he pull you over if ALL of your lights went out? Also, how would he see you doing this unless you were flashing WHILE passing him. If you doing this while passing him, then you were most likely NOT doing over the speed limit. Very strange.

I turn my lights on when it's dark and off when it's light. The only thing I worry about is some one behind me thinking it's my brake lights instead of my running lights. Other than that, I think people are smart enough to disregard errant light changes. Heck, I've accidentally flicked the high beams or horn occasionally with out middle finger being signalled in the rear view haha

To answer the original question- I also wait until no one is around to turn my lights on or off. It too is a weird habit I have. Don't feel alone.

Illinois law requires headlights to be on 1/2 hour before sunset, and 1/2 hour after sunrise.

I won't get in to the whole sun going around the earth thing.
