…Don’t you think?

First week that I’m approved to leave early for my son’s school ice hockey practice (employer is good all season ie through next March and no I don’t work in CA), someone puts a recurring meeting every Friday, on my calendar for precisely the time I was gonna leave (we are 5 day RTO).

Can’t make it up! 😂

Ps do I try to take it at my desk or driving, knowing a cell call drops from said desk to garage. Life is so complicated….

Either decline, propose a different time, or accept as tentative. This is a teaching moment for all... show yourself as busy or out of office on your calendar the moment you were approved to leave early.

Ummm, when the invite comes in there is a "decline" button too, as well as a "propose new time" option.

I have the same thing with lunch. I tend to take it at 1PM, even blocked it on my calendar and it made no difference; it's like a magnet for people scheduling meetings at that time. Even better, the company spans timezones and I have several coworkers in the Mountain time zone, so *their* lunch is at noon and people will schedule meetings anyway.

Decline the meetings. Offer a different time. I always thought a Friday afternoon meeting was a big “look at me I’m important” move. You don’t get a second chance to be with your children as fast as they grow and change.

A recurring meeting I wouldn’t even bother doing anything except obviously not join it.

Now if it’s a single meeting instance, I’d message the meeting organizer and ask them to reschedule it if they need me.

"Approved to leave early"

You've asked permission, and it was granted. You shouldn't be attending a meeting in any form.

If questioned or challenged on this, you should ask, Who's in control of your life.
