On my sister's '98 SL (automatic transmission), whenever it is shifted from park to reverse, if I listen closely there is a "ceramic clatter" noise as it gets into gear. The shifter moves into reverse perfectly fine and all other shifting as a smooth as silk, the transmission is shifting so smooth for having 87k miles on it. But is this noise something worth investigating? Any advice appreciated, my sis and I thank you!

I had some sticky internals on my Automatic transmission and Autorx fixed them. I was going to replace it but the transmission is still going strong nearly 2k miles later. But to answer your question, it doesn't sound like much, you might want to change the fluid as a percaution. If you are going to try Autorx, put it in first then change the fluid after a treatment. You wouldn't want to change the fluid and then put in the ARX. It's too hard and expensive to change T fluid and the arx should be drained after the treatment period.
Have you ever changed the ATF? Maybe get a flush with synthetic ATF.
Have someone listen under the hood,at the trans,and the exhaust while the car is being put in gear.While its certainly possible the noise is coming from the trans it could be something else.Does it make the same noise going from neutral into reverse?If not then the trans is probably not the culprit
The fluid has 8k miles on it and it looks like it came outta the bottle still! (It is the elite, Redline C+ synthetic.) I'm sure the fluid is not the culprit. I will listen to it when it is shifted from neutral to reverse, thanks for the advice everyone.
