Well on thursday we had a customer come into our shop with a 90' F-250 with the IDI 7.3 Diesel. So the guy wanted to switch over to full synthetic engine oil and we sold and installed Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40. The guy came back this morning and wanted to go back to dino because of a couple of leaks that sprang up around the motor. I figured that I would clean out a 5 gallon bucket and then drain the Delvac 1 into the bucket. Since the oil was installed on thursday I was thinking I could possibly just dump this oil into my 91 F-250 with a 460 since I will be doing an oil change in the near future. Does anybody think this is a good Idea or something I should avoid?

Let me get this straight, you want to do something for free, and recycle and help the environment, and you don't want a government subsidy? Most of the public will not understand this but I do, and I, no we thank you. Soryy if a bit offputting, but should should have read me earlier, this is much less, I think.
I'd run it through a filter or fine screen before putting it into your engine. Something like a kerosene filter funnel for filling lanterns.

well I know the IDI's run HEAVY soot loading in the oil. I don't know if I would take the gamble considering that the oil loosened enough junk around the gasket surfaces to cause oil leaks
Verify by odometer reading how many miles he put on this oil from Thursday until when he comes back in. If 500 miles or less, put it in a clean bucket and like stated above, filter it before you put it in your truck. If it's up there around 1K, put it in your used oil container and charge the guy for the conventional oil change.
I will assure you that the oil will come out of the IDI black as coal.

Typically not a fan of using someone elses used oil. However, this is a bit different. Assuming the 7.3IDI is in good shape (no fuel, coolant, air leaks) then I'd say go for it. His loss is your gain, in this case.

I've heard there is a quick and reasonably reliable test for fuel contamination, maybe coolant contamination. Put a couple small drops on a paper towel, then inspect the edges of the spot. If there is fuel contamination, you will see it along the edges of the spot. If it passes this test, and considering that it was only used for a few miles in an engine with a fresh filter -- you did install a new oil filter along with the Delvac 1, didn't you -- then the soot-blackened oil should be just as good as when you poured it from the bottle.

Not to mention that stuff is worse than dye. whatever it touches will forever be blacker than black.
I'd save it and use it in the next customer's oil change.
