Is there too many viscosities to choose from ?

I like quantity, don't want to see any grades eliminated...

Of course for most part I don't use anything but 5w30 or maybe 10w30 and 10W-40HM in my '69 Torino... Got enough 5W-20 & 0W-40 on hand to mix a change of medium 5w30, when those are gone there probably won't be any more...

20W-50 is the principal oil weight used in HD Motorcycles. They are several of these bikes out there. 20W-50 will be around for a long time to come.

ExMachina that's the BEST !! Absolutely perfect.

5/10w30 could cover the vast majority of passenger vehicles no problem.
5 to 15w40 for large trucks & diesels and turbo and European motors
20w50 for racing

I can see 10w30 HDEOs still being offered. And, for all the people who want to actually use a 10w30, especially for the reasons they indicate, I bet they'd be just as happy and probably better off using a 10w30 HDEO.

I realize bikes and boats still use a few odd grades. However, Imperial Oil has seen the writing on the wall. They don't even offer 10w-40 or 20w-50 up here, except in their specialty stuff. There is no regular Mobil 1 or Mobil Super conventional in either of those grades, and they got discontinued at least as far back as the SN rollout.

What would solve the confusion in the oil change places and the dealerships?

As for the bajillion lines of product that some oil companies offer, yep, that's the issue.

Yeah it's a bit less chilly

We got down to low single digits this last winter. That's a heat wave where you are at

0W20 and 5W20....

I will sell 0W oils only to the people who will be living in a polar circle

Dumb proprietary standards SHOULD ALL BE BANNED.

Yes you german car owners!

If the "basic" standards were rigorous enough, they wouldn't have to develop them. That's WHY they exist.

Yup, that's why ACEA exists, as a "group" so that the tests are representative of their (the members) engines.

However, we don't use ACEA over here, basically just API, so the manufacturers have to come up with their own approvals.

Overengineering.

Agree with that Garak.. People have a hard enough time finding or even knowing the correct viscosity.

I think it is good that the manufactors want to have higher level specifications for their cars. A better way to ensure performance and longevity as well.

No, we just have poorer oil standards. That's why DEXOS, Ford's WSS specs....etc.
