Is there really a shearing issue with Mobil 1 5w30?

Patman, We will have to agree to disagree. Mobil 1 5W30 is no where near as good as it's older brother 10W30. It was created to appease people that have been "Brainwashed" by GM. Mobil 1 10W30 consistently turns in the best used oil analysis of all the Mobil 1 SuperSyn product line! How significant is the cild cranking and pumpability difference of Mobil 1 5w30 vs Mobil 1 10w30? I can not imagine that it makes a significant real world difference.

G-Man II, I did consider that. I would rather have my oil maintain it's viscosity dureing the OCI. I fail to see how thining out then thickening up due to oxidation, nitration and other byproducts of use is a good thing. Any oil will thin then thicken back up if you leave it in long enough! If this process goes on long enough I belive you get gelling/sludge! The 0W40 has also had very inconsistent used oil analysis results. Most of the used oil analysis I have seen have not been impressive!

I still think that it would have made more sense to tweak the Delvac 1 with a slightly higher percentage of ester's to get it to qualify as 0W40 then try to reinvent the wheel!

Buster, As to HP loss I do not know! My Mom is not the type to take here truck in for RW/AW-dyno sesion. I can tell you it runs as smooth and quite as can be. It had no problem with over a ton and a half of sand in the box at HWY speeds! I will be sending in a sample just to see how the 15W50 is holding up. I doubt that you would ever notice the difference between 15W50 and 5W30 in terms of seat of the pants dyno! Your but just can not measure 3-5 HP loss! Toyotas do very well with thick oils. Ken4 has the used oil analysis to prove it.

From the used oil analysis posted on here, it appears to me that Mobil 1 5w30 is showing just as good results as it's 10w30 brother, I don't see any evidence in the used oil analysis here that the 5w30 is at a disadvantage over the 10w30 in wear results. Even if their pour points are similar, rest assured that when it's below 0F outside you will find your engine cranks over easier with 5w30 vs 10w30.

dickwells, have you posted any of these? I had no luck finding them in the used oil analysis forum. I've never seen Mobil 1 5w30 thicken out of grade.

I'm thinking that we really know less about the shear stability of an oil than we think we do. We take one analysis during an interval and say the oil thickened or thinned, but it's really only a snapshot that doesn't tell much because most oils thicken and thin at the same time. For example, if the analysis shows thinning do we say, "poor shear stability" or do we say, "excellent oxidative stability"? If you are really serious about quantifying shear stability I think you have to have the lab measure viscosity as 40*C and 100*C. If the VI decreased, the oil sheared, even if the 100*C viscosity was unchanged. Another way would be the 3MP approach of measuring every 1K during an interval, but that has the problem of always bringing in fresh top up oil which skews further results.

Actually, Mobil 1 5w30 is the OLDEST grade currently available. The first Mobil 1 sold in the US was a 5w20, but was quickly replaced in the early days (circa 1980) by 5w30. This was several years before Detroit started recommending 5w30 oils at anything above "arctic" temps, BTW. 10w30 didn't come on the scene in the US until the early 90s. (However, Mobil 1 10w30 WAS available in Europe back in the 80s. I had a friend who brought an 81 Mercedes 380SE over from Germany in 1986 and it had a nice foil Mobil 1 sticker under the hood with 10w30 clearly printed on it.)
 
YZF150, Luckily their are alot of Mobil 1 used oil analysis on this site. You can look through them yourself. You will find more viscosity changes with the 5W30 and the iron and copper seems higher.

G-Man II I started my Aprenticeship in Germany in 1988 so I was not to familar with Mobil 1 5W20. I did see plenty of 10W30 though! Thanks for educateing/corecting me!!

Patman, I would never disagree that 5W30 will pump and flow better then 10W30 at artic temps. My question is how much better and do you really get to take advantage of it? Is it worth the reduced shear and oxidation resistance? Is it worth haveing slightly lower HTHS numbers with an already thin oil?

If their is not a significant difference in cold temp cranking and pumping then why have it? The only reason to have it is for marketing to all those people that see 5W30 on their 710 cap.

It's a 90* V-8 with 4 chain driven cams, 32 valves, and a 6.5 quart sump. 10:1 compression, 325 ft. lbs. torque and 300 HP. No makeup oil needed; now 7000 miles later it's at the same level.

The 6000 mile used oil analysis is in the used oil analysis section if you want to look at it.
 
There really isn't much of a difference between the 5w30 and 10w30 in cold temp. performance to really warrant the use of the 5w30 IMO. I'd use 10w30 all year round unless your on the north pole. In that case I'd use 0w-20!...in a snow mobile!

This is just more smoke blown to conceal the old-school infatuation with heavier oils.

Exactly. I used the 5W20 back then. If anyone remembers, it was in cans, not bottles.
