Is rev and hold the engine while in P bad for it?

I think it would be better to think of it as a limited amount of horsepower-hours. The more you beat on it, the more HP it makes which uses up more of its capability.

Agreed. I've seen autobahn videos of BMW guys cruising at 7,000RPM for extended periods of time.
