I think it would be better to think of it as a limited amount of horsepower-hours. The more you beat on it, the more HP it makes which uses up more of its capability.
Is rev and hold the engine while in P bad for it?

my truck runs 3000 rpm @70 mph all day long. 5 minutes or 10 @3000 rpm wont hurt a healthy engine.

Agreed. I've seen autobahn videos of BMW guys cruising at 7,000RPM for extended periods of time.
