A post in the oil section has me tossing and turning at night with fear and loathing. It's possible my Nissan OEM filter is a FRAM. The Nissan filter for my '92 Maxima has a part number of 15208-55Y00. When I installed it, I glanced inside and noticed it has the plastic kind of button at the far end. I'd buy another one and cut it open to look for cardboard, but the **** thing cost me $10CDN. If I find out I've paid $10 for a FRAM.....ARGH!!!!

Fram is not a Nissan OE. Nissan filters are made by Purolator(for 93-02 Quest fuel, and air) and Mahle Tennex.

I should be able to sleep tonight knowing this, BUT, I'm still concerned about the plastic 'button' I see inside the filter. I'm assuming it's the bypass valve, and without too much searching, it looks like the only filters that have plastic bypass valves are FRAMs (or FRAMs with someone else's name on it). I'll definitely be sawing this filter open at my next oil change.
FRAMS HAVE been used as original equipment on new cars and trucks. They just have a paint job making it appear that they were made by the parts division of the corporation making the vehicles.

rcy, try a search in this subforum using the word "Nissan" and you'll find lots of good discussion about their OEM filters and alternatives.
You could even try searching using the OEM part number(s) as they have come up in a number of threads too.

They're real proud of the fact that they provide parts (including the oil filter) for the Infiniti G35 coupe. I'm still not sure if they make all of Nissan's oil filters. In my mind I drive a G35, but it's really a 1992 Maxima. How can I find out for sure if they make the filter that's specified for my car?

My Sentra uses the same filter and, as stated, it sure ain't no Fram! This filter is sweet enough to make me want to return the box of 12-Baldwin B113s I have and switch to the factory filters. The Baldwin filters cost $8.60 CDN/filter, where as when I buy 3 or more filters from the Nissan dealer they will drop the price to $7.50 per. Frams are about $5 in my area.

Yukster, what part number are you talkin' about? I've cut open a 15208 9E000 and it was just OK, nuttin' special. Carboard innards but much heavier material than Fram.
Gonna see if a Wix 51344 fits my Sentra.

My two Sentras ( 1988 and 1992, both with the E16i engines) take a 15208-55Y00 factory filter. The 15208-55Y00 has steel end caps, not cardboard and a good thick can.
Someday ( I hope soon) I'll cut one open and post the pix.

Now I'm even more confused. I thought the 15208 9E000 was a good filter. Here's a link http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/515 to a guy that cut one open and found metal encaps and, overall, a well built filter. Maybe they've changed manufacturer since the motorvate guy cut his open??? It looks like he did his comparison in 2001. Or maybe Nissan CANADA sources the filters from someone else???
