Is my engine working any different with 5k OCI

So I guess here's my new concern (again, sorry).

So I've gone from a 3k OCI to a 5k OCI and want to know if the engine is wearing, working, anything different when extending OCIs.

I mean is the engine going to wear out fastyer if I wait until the change oil light comes on at around 10K miles as opposed to doing it at 5k?

I know the oil lasts that long, but is it conducive to the same life of an engine that gets the oil changed at 5k or even 3k?

The 3k interval is old way of thinking, and most oil change places what you to think its the "right" mindset . So that they take more money from you.

If you have V6 or smaller engine with no turbo there shouldnt be a reason why a high quality dino wouldnt last 4-5k.

If you have powerful engine/Turbo/or wornout engine getting synthetic makes alot of sense, because it can last 5k or more with moderate use.

Unless you send your oil to a lab , no one can know what is happening inside of your engine. Would be helpful to post year and make of your car.

Just rememeber if you push your engine ( towing , raming gas all time , ect ) there no oil that can protect your engine, only decrease wear overtime. Moderate use + good oil = no worries for long time.

You should read some of the articles on the subject. Some of them claim that you actually generate more wear when you change oil very often.

Most due to low sulfur clean gasoline and new heavily hydro cracked base oil, modern engine don't need 3k OCI, even 5K is too conservative. Since 5K is a good nummber is easier to clock, with combines short trip and hwy trip, just use 5K OCI.

I doubt your engine will know the difference. In the end your car will rust out before the engine fails.

Ok, and seeing as how my truck has just turned 200k a couple of months ago. That's awesome to know. It'll be nice to save money for the next 200k miles.

The only problem I see is that the Squirrels Union will demand increased overtime pay.

5000 miles for an OCI is a good number for me. As is 200k for time to trade in. Any brand synthetic oil will keep your engine in fine shape for 200,000 miles of use. After 200k I find you get into some of the more steep repairs in the chassis and electronics and that repair cash is better spent on a newer car with 10-30,000 miles on it. But this is all JMHO.

As long as the engine is mechanically sound and is in somewhat normal use, 5k miles is just fine. Longer is likely doable also.

Search around the used oil analysis section for trucks similar to yours, and see how their engines are wearing with 5k mile and longer intervals. Maybe consider doing a used oil analysis yourself if you're planning on running out the oil change light. used oil analysis showed that one of our cars is fine running out the oil change light, while the other needs it changed at 20% on the oil life monitor.

At 200K a Cummins diesel is just broken in!!

What kind of an engine in what kind of truck?
Is the thing used as a truck or mainly as personal transportation?
5K should be absolutely no problem, and much longer drains might be possible.
3K is probably ridiculously short for almost any vehicle in almost any use, although I used to do 3K changes as well, back in the day.

True, but you need a whole new Dodge to put around it.

If it were my vehicle I would disconnect the OLM or put a piece of tape over it and do 5K mile OCI/FCIs.

Hampsters are hard to locate when they get loose. I would put out a pile of hampster food, then just follow the trail.
