That may very well be one of the best suggestions ever.
I seem to find myself in agreement here but I am not sure of why or how.
Some say engines last much longer now because they are built much better. Some say because lubrication oils are much better. I am simple enough to believe it is a combination of both.
I can remember when you could go to a place called a filing station and buy stuff called motor oil. I can also remember many of these filing stations had an overhaul bay because you would need to overhaul your engine at around 75,000 miles. Bragging rights if you get 100,000 miles. Bring you vehicle in by 8:00 AM Monday morning and they could yank it out, tear it down, reamers, hones, new parts, back together, drive it home Thursday afternoon(provided they didn't have to send bearings out to be re-babbitted) Today, if I had any serious doubt than an engine would not give full service to 200,000 miles, I would not consider that vehicle.
I do not know if the good old days ever were as good as they used to be. When I look at my daily use vehicles, one has 300,000+ miles and one has 208,000+ miles. Both got synthetic from the get go(from 20,000 on the one with 300,000) I have doubts(whether valid or not, doesn't matter with doubts) if I could have done this with say Valvoline premium conventional, Pennzoil conventional, Mobil whatever(clean 5000) conventional. Engines run perfectly, no consumption, no leaks, no seeps, no noises, start before you can release the key.
There seems to be a lot of talk(if you don't hear a good rumor by 10:00 AM, you should feel obligated to start one) about conventional oils soon being non-existent. There will be II+/III blends, III, III/IV blends, and IV.
I do miss being able to buy 5 quarts of a top motor oil and a filter for $3.25. But then, I miss buying a new 1964 Buick convertible for $2,400.00 after all dealing.
