RUSSIAN ANALYST PREDICTS DECLINE AND BREAKUP OF USA
Tue Nov 25 2008 09:04:22 ET

A leading Russian political analyst has said the economic turmoil in the United States has confirmed his long-held view that the country is heading for collapse, and will divide into separate parts.

Professor Igor Panarin said in an interview with the respected daily IZVESTIA published on Monday: "The dollar is not secured by anything. The country's foreign debt has grown like an avalanche, even though in the early 1980s there was no debt. By 1998, when I first made my prediction, it had exceeded $2 trillion. Now it is more than 11 trillion. This is a pyramid that can only collapse."

The paper said Panarin's dire predictions for the U.S. economy, initially made at an international conference in Australia 10 years ago at a time when the economy appeared strong, have been given more credence by this year's events.

When asked when the U.S. economy would collapse, Panarin said: "It is already collapsing. Due to the financial crisis, three of the largest and oldest five banks on Wall Street have already ceased to exist, and two are barely surviving. Their losses are the biggest in history. Now what we will see is a change in the regulatory system on a global financial scale: America will no longer be the world's financial regulator."

When asked who would replace the U.S. in regulating world markets, he said: "Two countries could assume this role: China, with its vast reserves, and Russia, which could play the role of a regulator in Eurasia."

Asked why he expected the U.S. to break up into separate parts, he said: "A whole range of reasons. Firstly, the financial problems in the U.S. will get worse. Millions of citizens there have lost their savings. Prices and unemployment are on the rise. General Motors and Ford are on the verge of collapse, and this means that whole cities will be left without work. Governors are already insistently demanding money from the federal center. Dissatisfaction is growing, and at the moment it is only being held back by the elections and the hope that Obama can work miracles. But by spring, it will be clear that there are no miracles."

He also cited the "vulnerable political setup", "lack of unified national laws", and "divisions among the elite, which have become clear in these crisis conditions."

He predicted that the U.S. will break up into six parts - the Pacific coast, with its growing Chinese population; the South, with its Hispanics; Texas, where independence movements are on the rise; the Atlantic coast, with its distinct and separate mentality; five of the poorer central states with their large Native American populations; and the northern states, where the influence from Canada is strong.

He even suggested that "we could claim Alaska - it was only granted on lease, after all." Panarin, 60, is a professor at the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and has authored several books on information warfare.

Developing...

Hmm...move to the energy/mining belt before they shut the borders ..stock up on ammo ...stake out as much acreage as you can ... hornswaggle someone for the mineral and water rights before they get too expensive .....

I like our women.

Steve, your signature raises a good point.

I do not see that happening.

However, I could see more people leaving USA to live abroad.

I spent a couple weeks in Ireland. If I had the means, I would not mind to live there for a while.

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! Yea right.... and get turned into a glass factory.

If we do in fact collapse, one of the remaining facets of government that will always keep the wheels turning is the military.

"We should give Detroit to the Russians."

Give it to them.... we'll sell it to them.
I think they already bought the Ford Rouge steel plant.

Americans will fight for thier homeland long after anything else. Russia would be really, really dumb to try and force this issue in any way.

Yea, thats one of the things keeping us at the top. We have enough nukes to blow up every major city in the world!!!! Perhaps twice

He might be right on some points. There are many things in our greatest country in the history of the world that are on a course that are unsustainable. The federal debt, health costs, energy usage etc. Eventually these things have to be changed. They cannot go in the direction they are indefinitely. Simply unsustainable. We have been living in the most prosperous time in history. Most people in our country have really never had to do without. I have lived in other countries, and I can state without reservation that we do not know what it is like to be poor. Simply having everything we want when we want it is not the end all of life. Maybe a shifting of priorities is just what the doctor ordered. I hope we don't end up trading our freedoms for a mess of pottage.
There--I feel better now

It's pretty clear he's not studied American demographics to any degree. He might want to stick to predicting what will happen in Russia. I doubt his record there is 2% correct over the last 2 decades.

It looks like Russia is waiting for our demise to swoop in.

I wouldn't take a lot of stock in what russians have to say... the same people that ran their 75-year experiment with communism and saw disasterous results.

That statement sounds very much like how people talked shortly after the Great Depression. After the Great Depression, the US bounced back and found itself in great form.

In theory, communism looks great and democracy is one of the more unworkable systems around. But guess what?... we're still doing better than any communist country around. I don't see people crossing the border at night to sneak into Russia!

Funny you should day that. When I was just old enough to understand the basic tenets of communism, I can remember thinking "What's so bad about that? Everybody gets what they need". Let's just say I've learned a little bit about how the real world works since then.
