These pics came from a Magnefine filter someone installed on his car. It has a built-in magnetic cap to prevent the metal paste from being re-introduced into the engine. Is that normal for a transmission to have that much wear after 30k miles. Which parts of the AT wear the most? Is replacing those parts requirement a rebuilt?

I just changed the trans filters on both my Fords a few weeks ago (30K intervals) and there was nowhere near that amount of gunk on the pan magnet. Yikes!

Why are you saying this magnet prevents the paste from being reintroduced to the engine? Isn't this an ATF filter?

And no that's not normal. Are any of the shavings from cutting it open?

They are plastic, and the media is replaceable; you don't cut them open.

I meant to say "re-introduce back to the AT." I want to leave the car name out but here is the link to the original thread:

What was used as transmission fluid? Country Crock?!?!?!?

I would monitor that closely. I would change the fluid again in 10,000 miles just to see the build up then.

I guess you can tell I've never seen/used one of these before.

Those striations on the bottom looked like marks made from a hacksaw, ergo my rookie comment

Hey, I just read the original article, this thing WAS cut open. I KNEW those were saw marks

That's a lot of paste ..but they may not have the magnet thing in the non-pan, for all I know.

I think a 2nd Magnefine would not produce as much debris.

You can tell the difference between a vehicle specific site and BITOG. There you have just about every poster wanting to know if they can fit auxiliary filtration ..while here you would have 22 arguments on whether you needed it or not.

Odd, maybe it was the previous version that had the media that was replaceable then....? Dunno, saw them on here before.

I noticed that wcbcruzer posted that. He frequents this forum as well, and I did a search on his posts. Apparently he owns a 2000 Accord V6.

Those transmissions were known for bearing failure. It's common for the drain plug to be loaded with metal chunks shortly before the transmission fails.

I wonder if that is his problem.

The plastic non replacable media ones also don't have to be cut. Under the label is a seam. Break the seam with a hammer and screwdriver and it unscrews. It can't be reused but you can get to the guts without cutting and contaminating it.
