Just bought today. Slight whine in 2nd gear and quieter in 3rd, no noise in park or neutral. Its AWD and unsure if the last fluid changes on the trans and rear transfer case. Was going to buy Honda OEM fluid. Thought maybe the noise could be harmonics from the driveshaft but not sure.

I don't see how it could ever be bad to change all the fluids you can change w/ suitable for use new fluids on a used vehicle purchase. Hondus are usually nicely designed for fluid drain/fills.

Thanks for your suggestions. Ive owned GM the past 8 years and was always told not to change trans fluid on higher mileage vehicles.

Make sure you use legit honda “dual pump fluid” in the rear AWD unit. No substitutes. The service interval is fairly frequent. Maybe 15k or 30 at the most, for it, so it likely needs to be done. Don’t substitute another fluid for it.

Mechanics probably say it because "they" don't want to touch an unmaintained transmission; fluid is changed and transmission fails and owners focuses in on the 3 months of "who touched it" rather than the previous 14 years of "no one touching it"
That would be quite the coincidence.

They've dealt with customers like this though and have decided it ain't worth the headache. Nothing wrong with turning away work ! In fact, if you're able to, it's a good problem to have.

Only recently traded in a '05 Element (mostly the same vehicle, mechanically), 193K miles, did all my own fluid changes. Used Valvoline MaxLife ATF for 30K mile changes the last 120K miles with drain and fill, trans worked wonderfully. Changed the Honda brand diff fluid every 30K. No noise, no problems.
