Is drifting silly?

Personally I LOVE drifting myself. I take opportunities to try in safe places on wintery conditions. A hoot with AWD turbo Subaru.

As a kid my friend from a town in western Maine when I live in NH mountains had a dad who bought him a "field beater" (1978 Corolla-RWD) that a ripe old age of 13 I learned to drive a stick and drift on dirt. Finally "track" (field) would turn to ice/snow.

We did not call it drifting then.

My 6 year old now loves Scandinavian flicks we do around safe neighborhood corners.

It really does nothing for me, but take me to a decent tractor pull and I'm in heaven. Like others have said, "different strokes for different folks."

No, that's not it exactly. That's an awesome video!

I tried to find some videos of drift competition, but I got tired of it after looking through a bunch that were more about music, weird camera angles, and snazzy looking car parts.

In any case, "silly" may be a bit harsh. I just don't really get it.

It's how they ban guns, and marginalise shooting ranges...motorsport will be next.

Very good point, sir.

Not my thing, but many people dont like what I do (drag racing) but if more people are into the car hobby as a whole then thats good.

I don't consider it a sport, but it is a ton of fun.

I like sliding around inappropriate vehicles.

Like this, anyone can drift a high HP RWD car.

In the snow its even more fun and doesn't burn up your tires!

Drifting is a lot like burn outs, silly sure, but a heck of a lot of fun!

They're all fads! Stop liking things I don't like!

I like large slip angles, in the snow or gravel its fun with the Tracker in rwd or if its real slick in 4wd.
Its funny how quickly the kids get used to it on our driveway too. My favorite surface is sandy pavement after a winter of sanding, somehow it has good characteristics for starting and maintaining a slide.
I did stud up the ATV this winter and it is great fun on the pond after I plow it. Its almost too easy though.
The snowmobile is fun too, with a foot of powder you can lean it into corner and slide it and corner almost like a boat. Its more of challenge to get right.

Watching it...meh.

Get in a snow packed empty parking lot and it is oodles of fun to do, especially in a 6000# suburban. I can do nose-in drifts around light standards for at least 4 revolutions. The Mrs. gets mad, but the kids love it!

I get thumbs up from the Wally world cart catchers too!

Personally I am not a fan of drifting, I consider it the figure skating of motorsports.

I know it takes skill, but the concept of someone crossing the finish line first and losing based on "style points" baffles me to no end.

Give me IndyCar, F1, NASCAR, DTM, Aussie V8, or sportscar racing and I am a happy camper. If WRC was on TV here I would watch that also.

Yeah it's silly, but I think that's why some people like it. Sure, driving your car all neat and tidy and strictly for efficiency and speed has its place.... but sometimes it's fun to look out the wrong window while balancing the car with the throttle.
