Is drifting silly?

I'm speaking of the modern sport of drifting, not the drifting that happens in dirt track racing, or the famous "4 wheel drift" of Juan Manuel Fangio. These are obviously useful applications.

In the motorsport of drifting, you apparently go into a corner, purposely induce oversteer, and then smoke the heck out of your rear tires as you slide around the corner. If I'm not mistaken, if a dirt tracker or short track racer hangs the back end out, he's attempting to find the fastest way around the turn, whereas the "drifter" is judged on form and crowd appeal.

I'm not saying these drift guys aren't skilled, but I don't see the point.

Sure it's silly but it looks like fun and takes skill. It's not any more silly than a car show or cruzing. I haven't figured out why people want to compare it to racing, it's a show of driving in a particular style.

Exactly.

It's all about entertainment. I think the "sport" of drifting is silly, but different strokes for different folks.

All motorsports have got to stick together, as any single one can be labelled "silly", by anyone.

Motorsports is enough of a target without getting picked at from within.

Oz at the moment is against burnouts, as it's "not a sport"

It's how they ban guns, and marginalise shooting ranges...motorsport will be next.

Until you've been to a Formula D event (professional drifting), don't judge it. I thought it was stupid until I saw it in-person. It requires a lot of skill, that's for sure.

I've been to drifting events. To me It's not racing. How they score points and such? More of an art form than racing. Yes it takes skill like an artist.

It involves cars so I went. Just have never gone back.

I liken this to young guitar wizzes - they can play all the fast solos, hammer ons and stuff....but can't play an actual song, let alone do a 45 minute set. So they can get a car sideways, jump a bike really high, take their hands off the bars etc, do all the trials tricks on their pushbikes, super skilled stuff - but to compete in a rally, doing all special stages, race 2 45 minute Motos, or compete in a trial, doing all the sections....nah, too hard.

I acknowledge the skills - I used to race a motorcycle on dirt tracks, doing the sideways stuff, have ridden trials for 35 years and done heaps of off road riding....but it just seems they only want to do the fancy stuff, ignore the boring bits.

Motor sport that needs a judge? Nah.

If you're away from other peoples things (property, cars etc) then by all means have at it.

Don't be like the kid in the Subaru that nearly slid into my Jeep at Auto Zone a few weeks ago.

Nothing silly about it IMO, it brings enjoyment to those guys that do it and the fans that enjoy watching it.
Doing it on the street is silly as is trying to copy any other form of motorsport.
