Ok, first off I would like to introduce myself. My name is Zack and I am a long time visitor to this site. I must state that I have learned a ton while reading these forums. I decided to join, because I have a little problem I would like some feedback on.

I bought my 06 Dodge Ram Hemi with 130k miles about three weeks ago. I checked it inside and out and everything checks out fine. Fast forward to the very next day, I go to check the oil and I noticed the pcv crankcase breather hose was disconnected! It was bent 180 degrees backwards. And the worse part: it didn't have a [censored] filter on the hose! The intake had a little one, but not the breather.

So basically, I would like some input on what to do now. I know I SHOULD take the valve covers off and remove sludge, etc. but I literally do not have the time or patience for that right now. I was thinking of putting some kind of cleaner in the oil and immediately change it. And maybe sea foam? I was also thinking of maybe getting a compression test done.
So far I have changed the pcv valve and re connected the hose.

What worries me is I have no idea how long the truck has been like this. I know during idle situations the breather hose sucks air, along with dirt in this situation, into the crankcase. The truck does not smoke at all and has plenty of power. Am I being overly paranoid?

Welcome!!!!

I would change the oil with a good conventional like Pennzoil conventional or mobil conventional and drive it. Use a good filter like a Mobil 1 or fram ultra, napa gold. Change again at 3000 miles, and not worry any more. If its easy to take the valve cover off, then have a look.

I think seafoam is overpriced for what it is, light oil, naptha, and IPA. I'd go without it. The IPA will flash off quick and the naptha will later, you are left with pale oil as the additive.

Ok sounds good to me. Thank you for your input! Do you think there is a real world possibility that that breather hose being open to unfiltered air could result in a premature death of my Hemi?

You said it was bent 180°....so there was some restriction. IMO with an oil change you'll get a good portion of whatever particles got in. I bet silicon would be a little high.

Agree with spasm3, run a short interval (or two) to flush out everything, have a look under the valve covers to check condition, and reevaluate from there.

I some how missed it during inspection. It was pretty easy to overlook considering everything else I had to go over, along with dealing with my two kids. Yeah I feel pretty dumb for not catching it but unfortunately I'm only human.
