Did you know that there are more than two human sexes? I didn't either, until recently. It turns out that there are a surprising number of people that are neither male nor female. I had heard of "hermaphrodites", a term which intersex people don't care for, but I hadn't thought about it much.

When I learned biology in high school and college, I learned that the karyotype of a male human being is 46,XY and the female is 46,XX. They didn't tell us that there were others. Klinefelter Syndrome has a karyotype of 47,XXY. This produces males that may develop some female characteristics. 48,XXYY often presents similarly.

There are also human chimeras, that is, a single organism developed from cells from different zygotes. These people can have more than one blood type, and more than one kind of DNA. Some are born with ambiguous sexual organs. Some males have been born with normal looking male anatomy, but with female organs inside. If undetected, this can lead to serious health complications during puberty.

There's a lot more to the subject, but I'll stop there. I mention this as it challenges some of my preconceived notions.

The single mindedness of some members here. It just is not right, there was no R/S/P discussion by the OP. The OP was just stating well regarded scientific fact yet it is not well known.

People confuse "a sex" with "sex"; for clarity, one is a biological trait; the other an act of reproduction.

I see comments about the former, none about the latter.

I don't understand the question.

Not sure what you're talking about. Is it verboten to talk about people being male and female? And how is that religious or political?

Um yea it's political, because there currently is political activity over that exact same topic.

So it's too bad you don't get to decide whats politics, politicians runs amuck on whatever the most random topics and bills as was the case here, it's on you to know what's a hot button political topic and you just have to avoid those topics here until it's no longer a thing.

Feel free to go have said discussion in a zillion other places though

I used to know more details, but there are other odd possibilities that turn up in addition. There's one in particular where, IIRC, the karyotype is 46XY (male), but another gene segment not on 46 is missing or damaged so that male development is never properly activated even though the "programming" is all there and correct. This is a very rare one, and people with this form never have a clue they're not female until they come up sterile when trying to have kids. Its a particularly cruel joke in Western culture because they develop not only as female, but physically darn near the Western ideal of a perfect female. IOW, they tend to look like supermodels.

Biology is weird. But what's being discussed in politics right now usually has nothing at all to do with biology.

The original topic isn't about transgender people and bathrooms; it's about people that do not meet the scientific classical definition of male/female. Point being, to me, one's sex not as binary as some believe. I remember my psych professor talking about people with an extra chromosome and how amazed he was that their personality traits were similar.

I must have missed the R and the P in this particular post (assumed worldviews/'hot button' current topics notwithstanding).

It may be a surprising number but is still a tiny minority of the population, something like less than 0.5%, not enough to redefine gender identifiers. I learned about this in a women's studies course in college, which I only tool because it fulfilled two gen ed requirements. I pushed back against the "redefining gender" narrative and surprisingly passed the class.

I was trying some humor.

I see no problem with the thread topic.

In Canada it means Retirement Savings Plan, a tax shelter.

I see the topic as 0/3. Carry on!

Biology is a weird thing and we're always finding weird stuff. Human condition and whatnot.
