Did you know that there are more than two human sexes? I didn't either, until recently. It turns out that there are a surprising number of people that are neither male nor female. I had heard of "hermaphrodites", a term which intersex people don't care for, but I hadn't thought about it much.
When I learned biology in high school and college, I learned that the karyotype of a male human being is 46,XY and the female is 46,XX. They didn't tell us that there were others. Klinefelter Syndrome has a karyotype of 47,XXY. This produces males that may develop some female characteristics. 48,XXYY often presents similarly.
There are also human chimeras, that is, a single organism developed from cells from different zygotes. These people can have more than one blood type, and more than one kind of DNA. Some are born with ambiguous sexual organs. Some males have been born with normal looking male anatomy, but with female organs inside. If undetected, this can lead to serious health complications during puberty.
There's a lot more to the subject, but I'll stop there. I mention this as it challenges some of my preconceived notions.
