The thread a few topics down "Internet speed test" got me wondering probably a simple answer but anyway how does one improve there "upload" speed?

better computer specs?
better Internet speeds?
both?

my DL is "ok" but would like to improve my UL speed some.

Gotta preface this and say I haven't gone to the site in years, but speedguide dot net used to have info on optimizing speeds and settings. Granted I haven't gone to the site in probably 6+ years at least. I'm on my phone with a slow connection so sorry if the site isn't there any more or if it's completely changed. It used to be a good source of info

you buy a faster internet connection

for instance my roadrunner turbo is about 24MBITS down or 2.8~~Megabytes/sec

but my upload is 1MBIT or about .11 megabytes a second.

the only faster upload available in my area is business class
which is 4mbit up and 4mbit down.

quite frankly i think this is absurd but its not regulated and its what is offered.

Both your download as well as upload speeds are controlled by your internet service provider and the plan to which you subscribe. Typically, the higher the download speed that you purchase, the higher the upload speed as well, but if you want your upload speed to be the same as download, then you need to buy a dedicated link such as a T1 from a local carrier - something that is typically not cost effective from a standpoint of a typical household. Typical household also does not usually require very high upload speeds either.

Computer specs aren't a bottleneck these days, unless you're running on hardware that you stole from a museum.

Call your ISP and pay for a faster speed. I can pull my max bandwidth (10m down 1mb up) on my iPad over wireless in my garage. I would imagine if you have a computer newer them 4 years you are pulling all they send.

What are you pulling?

Ok thanks men you just told me what i suspected here..

my currant speeds i have are from ATT/DSL..

Downstream Speed: Up to 3.0 Mbps
Upstream Speed: Up to 512 Kbps

and a test from Speed test.net shows

am i getting my advertised UL speed?

DSL is very much distance sensitive. The further away from the provider's central office (CO) you're located, the slower your speeds will be. That's why they say "up to...". 3 Mpbs/512 Kbps is probably an ideal case scenario when you're literally right next to the CO.

Good point. Make sure you're physically connected to the network when performing these speed tests.

BTW, here's my Comcast 12 Mbps down / 2 Mbps up service...

It shows somewhat higher speeds due to their PowerBoost feature which only temporarily increases your top speeds.

As the others have said, it's your ISP who severely limits upload speed...mainly because the only thing in it for them is a happy customer, and they (mainly cable companies) wouldn't want that!

It starting to bug me a bit, but I guess it's not THAT slow....

I checked mine too and yes my wired and wireless are about the same.

Wired and wireless are about a match for big up/downloads but latency is worse which affects when you have many small packets... like a webcam chat or VOIP.

No. ADSL is capable of 7Mbit down/1Mbit up even when you are a decent distance from the CO. This of course varies based on line conditions as well. You can have a long clean line that gives a much better sync than a short (close to the CO or remote) dirty line. In my experience you can get ~6Mbit down/1Mbit up on ADSL within about a 2Km (line distance) range.

ADSL2+ is capable of 24Mbit down/1Mbit up when within relatively short proximity of the CO. I'm 1.5Km line distance from the CO and am currently sync'd at 18.6Mbit/1Mbit.

ADSL providers use "remotes" to cover distances that are outside the range of the CO. Most ISP's have the ability to determine whether you sync to the CO or a Remote. In Ontario, in many cases you are at the mercy of Bell Canada, even when with a 3rd party ISP as to whether you are on a remote or at the CO, and whether the remote you are synching to is the closest to your location physically or not. If the Bell remote close to your location is close to capacity, and you are not being served by Bell directly, they may put you on a remote that is much further away but has fewer subscribers. This is to save ports for those who subscribe to Bell (Sympatico) directly. Not very fair.... But that's what we deal with up here.

Unless your Internet is insanely fast, your wireless hardware may be junk.

Other than a slight increase in latency, wireless "G" and definitely "N" should be faster than the majority of broadband connections on the market.

So Chris you agree to get a faster UL i'll need to up my Internet speed?

just making sure i'm on the right page with these guy's.

Yes. They SHOULD offer a plan with a 1Mbit upload. That's the max for ADSL and ADSL2+ (Annex A).
