For about the last 6 months, I have had trouble connecting to the internet. After Bright House replaced their modem several years ago, I had good service until there was a lighting strike about a half mile away, and a power outage last summer.

They have furnished a Motorola SB4100 cable modem, and I have a couple of Belkin routers, a fairly new wireless one and an older hardwired one. We have several computers and a Cisco telephone adapter.

Yesterday I was having signal problems, the activity lights on the modem were off. At least when they came back on, things connected. Quite often when I have problems, the lights will be on on the modem, but nothing is connecting to the net. How do I identify where the problem is? The last time I managed to get somebody out here, he connected his laptop to the modem, connected and told me the problem was with my equipment, and left. That was exactly what they did in the past when replacing the moden finally worked.

I actually have 4 different computers and 2 routers plus the phone adapter. It seems unlikely to me that all 7 would turn flaky at the same time.

When I have problems, I mess around trying the other router and connecting things directly to the modem, and rebooting, rebooting, rebooting.... Sometimes it is a couple of days of on and off effort before I get everything going.

Sounds like a signal or modem problem to me. Get them to replace the modem and give it another shot. Also you can try and leave everything unplugged for an evening, that helps sometimes with clearing settings loaded on startup.

Oh and you can always test by turning the modem off, plugging a computer directly to it, and turning the modem on and waiting a minute for all the lights, then try an access the internet. If you can, it's the router.

On my moto surfboard modem it has to be connected to WAN to display that internal webpage. Aggravating in times of outages.

35 dB signal/noise ratio and all is peachy.

Ok:

Value
Frequency 597000000 Hz Locked
Signal to Noise Ratio 38 dB
Power Level 3 dBmV
The Downstream Power Level reading is a snapshot taken at the time this page was requested. Please Reload/Refresh this Page for a new reading

Upstream Value
Channel ID 3
Frequency 35408000 Hz Ranged
Power Level 40 dBmV

Things are working as well as ever today. Should I retry on a bad day?

I have done that many times. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. It may work with one thing, but not another.

Since the modem worked with their computer when they came out, they refuse to do anything more.

One of the worst bouts of trouble recently was when I shut down everything before going away for the weekend. I think it was a day or 2 before I had things working. Start up after the power being off is one of the worst times.

I have thought about taking things elsewhere or borrowing other equipment, but since things work good for weeks at a time, I am not sure what that would prove.

Not on the moto surfboard I had, in fact it had a DHCP server built in which would issue an IP in the 192.168.100.x range if the wan wasn't up.

Yes..if those numbers vary by more than a couple of dB you have a signal issue.

They look good now.
