Intermittent starting glitch in 2005 CR-V

It starts but stalls immediately. It restarts fine. It doesn't stall while driving. Runs normally otherwise. This has happened three times.........once last Sunday after running for 10 minutes and then re-starting; Yesterday at initial startup for the day (engine cold); and today after about 10 minutes of running again.
Anyone else seen this in these vehicles?

send the car back to your dealership for warranty service?

Also: have you try fueling up from a different gas station? Suspect your fuel is bad, which could happen based on your description.

Dealership........warranty.......I'd rather drain my oil onto my face (cold of course) than go back there.
Plus those clowns will say "No engine light, can't make it duplicate, nothing's wrong."

It only gets BP or Shell gas. If it were gas, wouldn't it hesitate, run poorly or other? It does nothing except once in a while (did it again today) stall immediately upon startup. Re-starts fine.

Your symptom is too "general" to diagnose.

In order to narrow it down further, here are some questions for you:

(1) have your electrical components, connectors, wirings, etc. exposed to moisture recently? steam cleaning, solvent attack, spray, etc?

(2) when did this first happen? What happened before this problem first arise?

(3) have you tried various different gas?

Yeah, just like a lawyer: a dealership can be your friend sometimes, so long as you find a decent one whose willing to cooperate. Yes, I know there's stigma and bad image about dealerships but then hey! your car is still underwarranty so why not take advantage of it???

1. Negative. Nothign like that.
2. This first happened 9 days ago. Nothing out of the ordinary.
3. I will try different gas but I doubt that's it. If it were gas why would it not constantly be an issue?

I'll call the dealer techs and ask them I guess. It did it again today once.

Premium gas wont make a difference, unless the original problem was a bad tank. Its rare, but it does happen.

I watch other forums on 03-07 Accords and CR-V, cause I own one of each. Never came across this before. Odd the engine light never came on, very odd. Your right about the dealer, no code, no problem, but thats not to say you dont have a problem! Just stand firm...make them drive it a day or more. Ask a tech to drive it home. If its under warrenty, you dont want to start pulling things apart looking for an electrical problem or...who knows!

Suspect that this may have something to do with dirty gas or similar, which happens from time to time.

I have something similar happen to my car on occasion. In my case, if I let go of the key too fast, it will snap back past the run position halfway to the accessory position, which naturally shuts the engine off. There's nothing wrong with the car, per se. I just have to release the key more slowly.

I know Premium isn't the answer; I just put about 5 gallons in for the perceived extra cleaning.
I will pay more attention to the key position as well, thanks!

It seems to have gone away after a new tank of Premium gas. Car isn't driven very much these days as well.

Do you have a computer chip in the key? It sounds like a passive theft deterrent problem to me. Try a different key and see what happens.

It's Honda's Theft Deterrent system, where if you don't use the exact keys that came with the car, it won't run. If it were that, why would it start, then stall, then start right back up again with no further problem?

Bum Idle Air Control valve? I would check owners' forums for similar common problems before letting the stealership toy with you.
I had a dirty/bad IAC valve that was intermittent (~36k), so it couldn't be replicated at the dealer (no codes or CEL). The service writer agreed to accept video of the tach bouncing as evidence. But I never bothered as the problem went away. However, when the problem resurfaced last year (~70k), I was able to get a free out-of-warranty replacement IAC valve because there was documentation about my earlier complaint.

It's an intermittent problem. GM's passive theft deterrent "passkey" system has these exact symtoms when it is going bad. Maybe Honda uses a similar setup. Just a guess. Free internet advice.

Tosh, doesn't that control the idle when the A/C runs only? I guess it could be weird right at startup, but it never stalled or showed any rough/bad idling. It was all right at startup.

IAC valve controls idle speed all the time it's idling (AC or not). I only suggested IAC valve as a possibility for you to rule out, as I could imagine a failure producing an immediate stall. Check CR-V owners' forums: I find Hondas to have few but very specific problems.
