Interesting air filter study.

I'd love to see the Fram and the AutoZone "house" brand in there! But makes me want to take a trip down to the Chevy dealer and pickup some new filters. Anyone know if there is a Delco in the 14" by 3" size for an aftermarket housing?
 
That no name filter is probablly a FRAM, lol. Actually, this test has already been posted in the ISO 5011/SAE J726 air filter thread on this forum, one of the very last posts has this graph.

The test seems to be accurate. If i wasnt such a strong believer in the Pros of the K&N, my paper choice would be Ac Delco for sure.
 
Maybe there is reason that commercial equipment uses "paper" filters. Also note the filtering ability changes with use.
 
Paper is extremely cost effective. Not only does the construction cost engine manufacturer's pennies, litterally, it does a perfectly fine job of filtering. This is partially the reason why you will never see a cotton guaze or foam as stock equiptment.

Why would a company, like GM for example pay alot more money for a aftermarket filter that generally does the same job. There has been only one occasion, Ford uses K&N filters as OEM equiptment on the Mustang Cobra.

If i was an auto manufacturer i would choose a 15 cent cost paper air filter over a $5 cost of a K&N or Amsoil foam filter per vehicle. They both filter within SAE standards, and the paper cost a fraction of the cost, you know?

But like most filter tests there is realy very little overall difference in air filters. The NAPA Gold orWIX seem to be a good middle of the road but as I thought the Baldwin makes very good filters.

Study didn't mention anything about cleaning them between runs or just how they oiled them. I think that is the difference between Si used oil analysis: those that have been properly cleaned, oiled and maintained vs. those that have not.

It isn't minor if you look at the amount of dirt passed through the filter.

How much dirt got through each filter.

Any of the paper elements would do a good, reliable job, but for BITOGers looking for the utimate, there are big measurable differnace in the amount of dirt that gets through the filters.

The reusable filters in the test were brand new and “oiled” from the factory the first time they were tested. The K&N and AFE were cleaned and re-tested with fine test dust (the primary test was performed with course test dust). I didn’t plot the retest data but it does appear at the end of the report in the data tables. For the complete story behind the test go to the The Diesel Place forum link in the report.

What i dont understand is why the puralators and the wix passed so much dirt compared to the ACDELCO? It does not really seem to make any sense, reguardless of how many pleats and such. This test is saying a puralator and wix are only about a gram of dirt away from a K&N? If thats the case, then this dirt that is being passed much be incredibly small. People have been running wix and puralator for years and kept long running engines. 5 grams of passing dirt must be a great results.
