I am thinking about implementing an instant messenger program at work. The default suggestion is to use Windows Live Messenger.

Needless to say, I do not like the idea of using a Microsoft product.

If you guys use instant messenger at work, which product do you use and are you happy with it?

how would I argue that Google Chat is better than the Outlook Lync 2010 add-in?

"office communicator" is fantastic. Allows remote control of desktops, single signon with Windows. Besides those two features I guess it's the same as anything else. Hard to make an IM good or bad.

At my previous work place, we used Skype, and not just for messaging. We would also call employees in other countries to save money.

We run a Jabber/XMPP server. There are tons of clients available for that but most of us use Pidgin (used to be GAIM) on Windows. I've used Adium with it on my Mac although I really use Windows 100% of the time for my real work.
