Installed Windows XP Service Pack III

Although I am primarily a Linux user I also run Windows XP on occasion. I just did a complete backup of the Windows XP partition then installed XP SP3 Release Candidate.

Have not had a chance to play with it but did not have any problems during and after installation.

Looking at the list of new features this SP3 introduces, it doesn't seem to be anything worth installing, at least not while still in testing stage.

The biggest advantage I see is that if you need to reload XP now, it's only load XP plus SP3, where as of pre3 it's reload XP plus SP2, plus a bazillion updates/fixes.

I welcome it even if it doesn't do anything else. When it's finalized I'm going to clean my computer off and just reload software that I currently use.

It's quicker than SP2. I installed it over SP2, and noticed a bit of quickness on my older system.

I too installed it over SP2 and noticed a speed improvement + it has a cleaner look on startup.

Is there a way to revert back to pre-SP3 in case the SP3 install doesn't go smoothly? I mean like creating a restore point.

There should be an entry in Add/Remove programs, just like it does with SP2, unless your version of XP had SP2 slipstreamed into it. But I haven't gotten SP3 to test.

My son just reported back... Computer is a HP with 256K. He said that it's slightly faster, but the biggest difference has been when opening and closing apps., and files. He describes it as noticeably "Smoother." Plus no negatives or glitches to report. He's been running this SP3 upgrade for two days.

My SP3 install went smoothly. Haven't noticed any performance improvements thus far.

QP & Freeze, do you regularly tidy up with CCleaner, Defrag, then reboot?

You can also slipstream SP3 into the existing XP install and then you only have one install to do (plus any post SP3 patches should they appear).

When SP2 came out I burned a new XP install CD that had SP2 integrated. Will do the same when SP3 is official.

I use Nlite. http://www.nliteos.com/

Much easier and fewer steps. Plus you can burn your new OS CD within Nlite.
