I never said redundancy wasn't important. The discussion is about file permissions. No arguement from me about the importance of backups.

Believe me, I see it almost daily. When I'm working general territory, I've had to face customers and ask them what their recovery solution is and are they ready in case we need to go that route?

I don't know the nature of your media, but it sounds like it changes, so it is being modified.

The assumptions I stated were that the media is static, with the primary directory modifications being additions or deletions.

Sounds like my assumptions don't apply to your case.

However, they knowledge I share may still help the OP.

If one is root, you don't have to find the owner.

It's your server and data, so do what you want. I'll do what I want with my servers and data and let's leave it at that.
