Installed Ubuntu Netbook

So I got tired of using Windows XP on my little Acer netbook, and decided to wipe the system clean and install Ubuntu Netbook on it. I've never used Ubuntu before, so this is all new to me. I had to do a few google searches for the couple of hiccups I experienced during install. I was about to lose it at the "Who are you" screen during setup, when a google search revealed that my username had to be in all lowercase letters, or it was a no-go; easy enough, but still a bit weird.

My biggest issue was getting the wireless internet to work. I had to hook the netbook up to my wired internet connection and download and activate the proper Broadcom driver, but at least Ubuntu pointed me to the correct one automatically.

All in all, I like the look and feel of Ubuntu Netbook so far. To my eyes, it looks almost as if someone threw Mac OS X and Windows 7 into a blender, and Ubuntu Netbook edition came out. Since I like OS X and W7, this is a good thing to me. It's also good knowing that there are so many Linux users on BITOG, should I ever run into a problem.

Congrats, I use desktop; it is encouraging you took the plunge and had few issues.

Make sure you do your updates.

Username doesn't have to be in lowercase IIRC, but linux is case sensitive.

it wouldn't allow me to complete the install until I entered my username in lowercase. Maybe a Ubuntu Netbook edition-specific issue?

Odd. As a unix admin it makes total sense to me as to why it would be in lower case; the entire OS consists of lowercase commands and historically usernames are lowercase, everything is in lowercase for convenience, but I don't know why they would have enforced it.

Not sure if desktop has this issue because, haha, my userids are in lowercase as are the guest accounts.

Also I should mention that I did the install using an SDHC card, not a traditional USB Stick. I had to go into the BIOS to tell the netbook to boot from the SD card. Several folks on the internet didn't seem to think an SD card was bootable, but I proved otherwise.

Glad you were able to get the issues resolved quickly. You'll find it to be a pretty good OS I think. There are plenty of users here and elsewhere to give you a hand if you get into any weird stuff.

Yes, it does. When I upgraded to 10.04, I accidentally used a mix of uppercase and lowercase. It didn't accept that.
