Installed an Odyssey Battery Today

My old battery was 7 years old. All my spare batteries that I have around just don't hold much of a charge any more. Time to get a Military Grade Battery.

PHCA (5 second Pulse Cranking Amps) is 1750. CCA is 950. It's a deep cycle Gel Cell. Made from Pure Virgin Lead. There is nothing recycled about this battery.

I paid $330 CDN + taxes for it, list is about $440.

Optimas used to be good, but I heard that there's been a lot of warranty claims with the Optimas since Johnson Controls moved the manufacturing to Mexico. For the Odyssey, I get a 4 year free replacement and a 10 year pro-rated warranty. Can't beat that. It'll be a shame to get the battery dirty!

Now I just have to upgrade the battery cables. They're starting to get the corrosion from the inside problem.

I hear that Sears DieHard Platinum is made by Odyssey for a little less money, about 30-40% less.

No battery is worth $330. You got 7 years from your old battery; what more can you ask for?

Last battery I bought for my Explorer I paid $35 for it from a guy on craigslist. It was an exide 6 months old, and his wife totaled their Windstar and he kept the battery. That was 4 years ago. I look at a battery as a disposable item like brake pads or rotors. When they were out get a new one.

Yes, butI couldn't find a DHP around here. Maybe a Group 34 if I drove for a while to find one. I'm not sure if the DH Platinum's are the same here in Sears Canada. But yes, the DHP here looks like the Odyssey Casing. A group 34 Odyssey would probably be closer to $250-$280 for me in CDN dollars.

I can see something like this for a hot climate, but in the cold a regular battery will work fine. Thats quite some pricetag for a battery as well..

It's a Deep Cycle AGM sealed spill less battery. It's no regular battery. I have a sound system in the explorer, extra roof and bumper lights, and a winch is in the future. Also on occasion i'll get mud and water into my alternator while out on trails, and it simply stops charging until the next morning, in the middle of nowhere, so the reserve capacity of this battery being a deep cycle puts my mind at ease. I drove about an hour once with no alternator on a 4 hour trail, and the lights were getting very dim at night...

This should last 12+ years. The battery that was in there was about $175, a Magnacharge from the local parts store. Wasn't mine, the previous owner put it in there, but now the truck isn't just a basic Start up and go to work truck anymore.

By the time the original battery fails, you are at 5-6 years. Do you really need a super battery for its last 5 years. The warranty at Wallmart is not bad and their best battery is $70. Thats a lot of Oddesy batteries.

I have said this here many times, but if you want a good battery go to your local wholesaler. Make a cash sale with them. You will get a better battery than the chain stores sell, and you will pay less. Warranty may not be as good, but you will have money in your pocket. The major battery maker offer their wholesalers an option of selling the batteries at a lower cost, and the wholesaler covers warranty, or marking up the battery and the manufacturer covers warranty. That's what the chain stores take, and the batteries cost more. Also, the chain stores sell the lower quality line of batteries.

Canadian Costco wants at least $100 for a Group 65 plus BC enviro levy's for my truck. I have had Kirkland Costco's die every 3 years in my dad's Astro van.

After looking through the prices for the more average size Odyssey Batteries, they run from about $150-$270 for an AGM High Cranking Amps Deep Cell. I wanted a direct fit for my truck so I had to get the Heavy Duty Commercial Group 65.

Yes it will outlast my truck, and it will go into what I buy to replace it.

This is BITOG. We try to get as many miles as possible out of synthetic oil, why cant we try to get as many years as possible out of a Battery? Lets say this thing does last 10-12 years as advertised. If it's still working but slightly diminshed, it can go into service on a tractor or utility vehicle.
