After replacing the pump for a leak I'm considering a filter. However, I read the Cardone filters come apart and leak, and the plastic accordion ones have issues too.
Anyone know a reliable PS filter?

I started to go there but had a Magnefine leak ATF at seam - changed that to spin on.
Now have jumbo syringe and change a bottle full PSF once/year ...

I've used magnefine filters for the AT and PS for years with no problems.

I have heard of the magnefine filters blowing up on PS circuits (cruise Amazon's reviews) but Im pretty sure some are being installed in the wrong place. You can't put it in a pressure line. It has to be on the small return line to the reservoir as that has virtually no pressure on it.

My magnefines DO seep at the seem, but its only enough to make dust stick to it real bad. It doesn't drip or anything.

The filter is installed on the return line the pressure is low low low. In the long run a spin on filter adaptor is a way cheaper option plus you can get better filtering than with Magnefine filter.

exactly.

Cheaper and easier to simply siphon off old fluid periodically.

Your pump will never know the difference

I dont see how thast could be. All the return does is spit the fluid back in the reservoir. There is nothing to create backpressure.

Capiche?

Whats the point of adding a filter for PS fluid? I just flush the PS with fresh fluid, not much harder than just siphoning and guarantees all fresh fluid.

The Magnefine filter will work as long as it is attached to the return line. I use remote oil filter mounts with spin on oil filters for PS fluid filtration on my work trucks. Fluid stays nice and clear.

I put mine in the line where I cut it to drain the system. Easy access under the bumper cover.

... still have a couple MF's in cabinet- but would need to figure out flow direction ...

Well, only got one vehicle left with hydraulic - got to mess with it more or see a psychiatrist in his 70's.

Yea, the remote mounts were easy to install. I did remote filter mounts for Transmission Fluid on all of my vehicles with Automatic Transmission and once I got done doing that, I figured my as well do the same for the PS Fluid units as well since I had plenty of room for the mounts and hoses. Plus, the remote mounts I bought take the same filter size (3/4-16 thread) as the engines.

If your PS is putting out 100 psig, you don't need a filter, you need a pump.

The discussion refers to filtering P/S fluid with a Magnefine or a remote mount filter... My Tahoe had a serious problem with dirt contamination (sabotage) and the spin on filter mount fixed the transmission by polishing the ATF with a Wix 51269 element. The filter base used was B&M or Derale and I can't be happier with the end result for the cost to install the filter system... The P/S had the same contamination, Blackstone did a particle count and changing the fluid did not purge the system clean in a single flush. Considering adding the Magnefine to clean up the Power Steering system because the A/T filter made such a huge improvement in reliability.

Particle Count
P/S 21/20/18 (P/S is too dirty at 20/17/15 suggested by Blackstone)
A/T 24/23/20 - Flushed the ATF 22/21/18 - After adding the remote filter 17/16/14

Any filter is cheap insurance against replacing expensive parts or having a breakdown.

On mine it was so dirty it was affecting the steering. No joke I had strongarm steering until I removed the reservoir and hosed that screen out with a can of brake cleaner.
