Whats the opinion of the FX35 suv? I'm looking at an 09 with a no start condition and 198000 miles. Its the Nissan 3.5 V6. Seller says the mechanic says it's a timing issue? Would it be worth buying for $2500? Is the engine an interference engine? Thanks

Friend of mine has an Infinity M35, their fathers old car. It has something like 30k miles on it. Sadly, the electrical system has aged poorly. There is some current draw problem, and Nissan no longer supports the vehicle with body control modules and such. I'm not sure if FX35 is better supported, but some serious research is in order before purchase.

If it has a cvt I would shy away. If your pretty mechanical and think you could tackle a timing issue maybe. I think they have quite long timing chains.

The engine should be a VQ35 v-6 similar to what was in the 350z. They made alot of them and if you go rebuilt engine route shouldn't be difficult. I almost jumped on an older Audi A4 with the v6 as it was a similar issue. Come to find out there's a tool to lock the engine camshafts together so timing isn't off. This might be Similar. My question is why can't the mechanic fix it if it's only a "timing " issue?

VQ35 is an interference engine. If a chain snapped its junk. There are left and right inspection covers on the VQ's but there a bunch of work to take off - and I think there on with RTV - not a gasket. And yes, timing chains were a problem in those years.

Did you pull codes?

I believe its the 7 speed Jatco transmission. There quite good if maintained even a little.

If its in good shape might be worth it. You will have to assume the engine is junk until you know for sure it isn't. Good luck!
