There aren't many around and would you trust one with your EV? Seems like you're stuck with dealer service for your brand. Are there pro level diagnostic tools available like Autel etc for EVs?

Some of the oe info is very expensive. Cost more than you make on the jobsRather than rely on aftermarket diag tools, why not just get the licenses/subscriptions for the brands you want to service?

Not considering any and no EV buy on the horizon. Just something I thought of, there's an indie ICE repair shop on every corner. Firestone Complete Auto Care advertises Hybrid & EV repair here, no idea about their rep repairing anything. We're 100 miles from Tesla, Polstar, Rivian, VW, Volvo etc so you try Firestone or get the car to Phoenix to a dealer somehow. May be something to consider if buying a used EV.Which services are you considering? Which brand EV?
Someone comes in with an error message that the flux capacitor malfunctioned in whatever their brand EV you can diagnose and repair it? Do EVs have an OBD-II port or something similar? While I dont specialize in EVs I certainly do service them. I have customers with Teslas and Polestars and bolts as well as just about every brand of Hybrid. I hold the ASE L3 certification. Bottom line is 80 percent of the car is still just a car.
A local Community College, DeAnza, has a great 2 year Auto Tech program. Always impacted. They added EV training over 2 years ago. We have a lotta cars around here...Good to see people are seeing an opportunity and jumping into EV repair.
Some EVs have an OBD II port, some do not, they are not required to the OBD II compliant because OBD II is part of an emissions standard that EVs obviously dont fall under since there is no gas engine. Tesla began using a standard 16 pin data link last year as opposed to their proprietary ones. We have Tesla toolbox (with all the various adapters) which allows us full diagnostic access. Any domestic (GM, Ford or Chrysler) EV is diagnosed with the same factory tooling as the gas and hybrids and we have those tools, same with the asian manufacturers (only thing I am missing on asian is Hyundai/Kia and Mitsubishi). I have not looked into tooling for rivian or some of the newer EVs because I have not had any come through my door yet. I spend north of 15k a year on subscriptions to make sure I am service ready for whatever comes through the door. Not considering any and no EV buy on the horizon.
