Incredible Gas Mileage

I bought new 1996 Ford Contour, 4 cyl 5 speed, it gets 36 mpg while on the highway at 70-75 mph while on long drive vacations. I use actual measuring of each gas tank fill to figure my mpg.

My 1998 Neon R/T got an average of 38 mpg on a 1700 mile trip through the midwest. This was with minor mods and bad gearing for the highway.

Ive been driving a 12 civic rental recently, and getting >40 isnt hard in mixed driving. 3 people in the car too.

OP, have a car similar to yours (2003 Alero with 2.2L Ecotec engine) which returned between 36-38mpg on several highway tanks on our vacation trip last summer. Cruise control was on most of the time, with speeds varying between 55-65mph (usually under 60mph, unless traffic conditions dictated otherwise).
