In-tank Fuel Pumps

As for fuel additives, does anyone know more details. I would think that a well regarded additive like Techron used in proper mixture and only once and awhile, not every tank should be OK. There are additives for fuel injectors from companies like Slick 50 or Outlaw that claim to be many times as strong as the normal fuel injector cleaner. Maybe they are the problem? What about drygas? Or Eythanol (E10) fuel? You have read what is has done to some older fiberglass gas tanks in boats?
 
With my Sierra it is probably easier to lift the box off and change the pump than it is to drop the tank, especially if the tank is full. I have not had a chance to inspect the box mounts yet but I will. The tank is big, it holds 34 US gallons.
 
A mechanic told me tonight that he normally checks for a voltage drop on the power and ground wire (under load) going to the fuel pump. That the fuel pump could fail due to low voltage over time. I am not sure what symptoms the exact symptoms would be for a fuel pump that failed due to low voltage.
 
Fuel pumps are hit or miss. Its a mass produced component. Don't expect them all to be perfect.

The lower your fuel level, the harder it pumps. The old pump lift head restriction causing increased load and wear.
The lower your fuel level, the hotter the fuel is in a circulating system.
So, unless you're doing some MPG comparisons, don't run empty or wait for the fuel idiot light.

I also don't see low voltage as a pump killer. If anything, it'll extend the life of the motor.

I also haven't seen any name brand FI additive kill a fuel pump. Sorry, but 182k miles is a great life for a fuel pump. One word for ya, coincidence.
 
I would not mind the fuel pump failing if it were not for the fact that its a pain and several hours of work to drop the tank and reinstall. Did I mention all the ________ that drops all over your face while dropping the tank?
