In Oil Filters, What is E core?

Is this referring to the plastic center tube? If so, wouldn't this be the best center tube in filters? All the cartridge filters I use in my Fusion have had the plastic center tube. For the last several years I have only used the MC FL 2017, because it doesn't collapse like the Fram or M1 did.

I was on Amazon yesterday and sizing up new filters for a fresh application.
I ran into the e cores and you should see the advertising slop they are pushing for these. You can crush the can and extract more oil with our patented blah, blah, blah.......... lol

I noticed they are also going to extra lengths to make the difference between the old and new not as noticeable.

Yes, I believe the center tube is plastic. My wife's last car was a Mazda 5. It had a cartridge filter with a plastic tube. Traded it in with about 90K on the clock. Never an issue. I think the old Walmart Supertech filters, in some applications, were e-core. The new ones are Wix made.

The early spin on ecore filters had only 4 support bars in the cage. The problem here was huge open spaces could allow the media to blow out when pressure got too high. You could find some examples on the forum. Some time not too long ago the design was updated to have 8 bars instead of 4. Now the media has much better support and no reports of blow outs so far.

Another issue people had and may still have is over the way the endcaps are bonded. There is a chance the endcap could peel while in service and allow dirty oil to pass through. This issue is most likely to occur when the filter is left in service for way too long.

'Plastic/nylon cage' well adapted to cartridge filter use, spin-on use as in ecore, not so much.

First there's the early cage opening, pleat uniformity and media spareness issues. Add to it the use of a nitrile combo valve in those applications requiring a bypass, as opposed to standard spin on filters using separate metal dome or thread end bypass. Even GM who started using ecores won't now use a combo valve in their ACDelcos ecores with a bypass. And then there's a GM tsb regarding use of their own ecores.

As filter flow is no issue in pc use, no advantage to using an ecore. And when it comes to combo valve vs standard separate metal bypass, really a disadvantage to use an ecore.

Isn't Ecore a trademark belonging to Champion Labs. As others have mentioned, it has to do with the plastic core in filters. I believe the implication is that Ecore is more ecologically friendly than the traditional steel core.

Yes, ecore is a plastic cage and non-metal end caps (usually felt or cardboard).

Many ecores don't have enough bars in the cage, so it breaks and the media blows right through!

Why can't they make the plastic cage just like a regular center tube with round holes? Alternatively, why not a metal cage with about 8 bars?

It does?

How is plastic more ecologically friendly than steel?

Straight from Champion Labs, although it still shows the original center cage design

I always thought the E originally was some sort of emphasis on E-conomy, not E-cology.

If the filters are recycled such as at O'Reilly or Walmart TLE I see no difference in true ecological impact personally; I think it would be challenging to produce honest data showing a statistically significant difference.

The ADBV function of the combo valve employed in the ST and STP Ecores I tried was always compromised by the end of a 3K to 5K miles O/FCI.

Yea, I've wondered the same thing, particularly in the case of a cartridge filter, where the steel may likely be recycled.

Seems to me like a solution in search of a problem. With spin on filters, the current metal center tube, louvered or holes works fine. Flow not an issue in pc use and other then hearsay seen nothing that proves the spin on ecore provides any significant difference despite the promotional aspect by Champ.

As noted, the plastic/nylon cage well suited to cartridge use design. The Champ ecore spin on design, not so much. Too many compromises and cost saving features, including but not limited to the nitrile combo valve bypass.

We've seen "blow out" even with canister filters when there was too much oil pressure and the steel can split. Often that's caused by a defective oil pump or using oil that's too in very cold starts.
