Does a series of car backfires sound that much like gunshot? I'll be the first to say I don't have much experience with the sound of weapons fire, but I do know that a car that is running bad enough to backfire has a pretty distinctive sound ...putt...putt.cough...cough... bam.. cough. putt.

I'm curious what weapon you automatically associate that with?

I can remember us kids, we were riding home from school in an AmTran Genesis..and there was a car going the other way backfiring...and we all ducted in the seats thinking we were being shot at.

Ridiculous!

I was thinking the exact same thing. Maybe they decided to shoot out of their vehicle, forgetting to roll down the windows.

These cops should be sent to war for some real training before being back on duty.

Fire those fools, charge them with attempted murder, and get that trash off the street. It's bad enough that we have to fear our own neighborhoods,, but fearing for our lives because of the poorly trained and trigger happy morons that wear the badge is the final straw.

And that comment about this happening in Las Vegas is absolutely the truth. It's a system wrought with cover-ups and payoffs. To think that this happens because only 1% of the 'force' is bad is total ignorance. I hope and pray that Erik Scott's family drags the Metro Police in Vegas into the dirt from whence they come. And may this poor man in Kansas City receive the same payment. It's attempted murder at the very least!

Perfect example of the low quality of recruits these days.

I think this should be handled like it would have been for a civilian that came out shooing. Police are supposed to have a higher standard of care and if they use their equipment recklessly like this, they should be held accountable at a higher level than the everyday person.

They should have at least been charged with reckless endangerment or worse.

This also underscores why police have become more dangerous than criminals.

Missouri is also known for pulling over anyone with an out of state tag and accusing them of hauling drugs too. Stay away from I70 just east of Kansas City. That county is known for trumping up tickets to keep the county budget in the green.

I bet when they go deer hunting, they shoot at the sound of the leaves being rustled, not the sight of what is rustling them.

I mean, isnt one of the first steps in killing someone 'identifying your target'?

Also, I'm very surprised this story was written. I thought all cops got praises all the time. Maybe they could have been partisan like Camu and said they were just defending themselves.

Part of the plan really.

In Oz, Capsicum Spray was introduced as a last resort, where only lethal deployment of a firearm was tho only alternative.

It was soon "saving" dozens of lives a year in my town, with Police spraying dozens of people a year...

Now we have Tazers, which are only to be deployed as a last resort, where lethal deployment of a firearm was the only alternative.

And now we are getting people tazered 28 times.

Initial report is single issue...later comes out to multiple.

It's a necessary part of the process that when you see a cop/TSA checkpoint/etc.that you worry whether you are going to survive the encounter.

They are probably miffed that there's a surviving witness.

From Robocop II in regard to civilian casualties:

Will they be suing us?

Only the live ones, sir.

But they always have relatives.

That's usually the case, sir.

We had a customer who's Ford pickup had some starting issues. As I was walking away to get some tools, it let out a back fire that sounded like a slightly attenuated shotgun being fired.

I wondered that myself... Maybe they had time to grab a shotgun with slugs...

Wonder what would have happened if this happened in Texas? More people carry guns there and I bet if someone not doing anything wrong was opened up on, they would have shot back.

And there is statute law and court cases on the books in that state that allow use of deadly force against law enforcement officers who endanger life outiside of their authority.

Just wonder what would have happened. I bet the story would have read totally different if this happened in Texas.

I think that if it was in Texas, then ultimately SWAT teams would be called in to take out a "cop killer"...and there would be no-one to tell the actual story, as even 'though he was in the right, he'd be dead.
