At Three Mile Island Nuclear Station Unit #1. They are starting it up again and are shooting for 2.5 years or so. I was in training for 2/3 of that time. I was a Junior engineer in 1970 and worked on learning the plant and reviewing system descriptions from the design engineers. I became a Maintenance Foreman in 73 and then Became a mechanical maintenance instructor in 1980.

My preference would go back to teaching. at the age of 79 it will be a new challenge. I want to start in about a month after I get settled in retirement living. I would be a sub-contractor and the pay last I heard was $50+/hour. I know the plant inside out since It was maybe 30% complete when I got there.

Now that's the kind of institutional knowledge that is sorely lacking in today's world. It's nice to see the plant operators are reaching out to the original crew.

Good for you, enjoy it!
I tend to make up this gap with older Consultants - for the longest time I preached that we are missing opportunity for organic growth, blah, blah, blah …
Eventually - I learned since they are hidden from headcount - management turns a blind eye to the practice bcs results trump everything else …

Nice! With your qualifications and knowledge I’d ask for a lot more $.

You have real technical knowledge that benefits society and keeps operations safe.

It shouldn’t just be doctors and lawyers and RE developers making higher pay.
I am not sure he is there for money.

Best of luck. That would be cool to go back.

Actually that is true. I enjoy retirement and at almost 80, in decent financial condition, and in a retirement community where we will be taken care of; I would just like my knowledge to be useful. Nuclear is our best base loaded energy option.
I admire you and the position that you are in. I mostly enjoyed working and if there was some golden opportunity I would consider a part time job. It's not about the money at all. I enjoy working with people/ teaching what I know/mentoring.
Sure being retired my days do fly by and I wonder where I would find the time, yet I have fond memories of helping others succeed.

Do you have a job offer ?

I wonder how much has changed since you left.

You have lots of experience and knowledge.

There’s a fine line between taking the easy route with knowledgeable older talent, and deliberately transferring knowledge and expertise to the next generation.

Finding the next gen folks that want to do it, and, frankly, the older folks willing to do so, is increasingly challenging.

Indeed - for me it’s often “hired gun” - or work short. I do remind them for the big bucks - we expect some mentorship (they tend to do that well) …

Maybe not. But $50/hr is $100k/yr. Hardly a lot of money anymore.

He has first hand, from the start, institutional knowledge. There’s value in that.

More like $100 an hour with nuclear experience as a contractor.

Nurses make $50 an hour easily….

That's the situation by which I'm pursuing my hobby in professional racing. They bring me in as a consultant. My 'job' is to oversee those physically working on the vehicles, and give advice or suggest better practices where appropriate. Finding young talent who want to be there, who are willing to be there, and who are ABLE to do the job, isn't easy.

I wouldn't be willing to travel around the country, being away from home and family and other interests in retirement, for $50.00 per hour. The team owner(s) know this, and still want me there.

I live 15 minutes away. I really don't care about the money. What I would like to do is get signed up as a contractor with all the liability stuff out of the way. I can fit into engineering, maintenance, training, or even operations. I would just do what the other contractors want/need in terms of advice, problem solving..you name it. I'm just happy with a stipend to cover gas. As I prove my worth (if) they can pay me more.

It wasn't my intention to compare our situations. You are local to your opportunity. I am definitely not local to my situation. Pretty much anywhere I go for my consulting deal, involves getting on a plane. The only way I do my consulting deal, is if they make it worthwhile to me.

I hope your situation proves to be beneficial to you.
