Ignition lock cylinder

The ignition cylinder on the wifes car is getting to the point where it needs replaced. The only ? I have is do I need to get a certain type to replace it? Rockauto has 3 flavors and I do not know if the car has any type of transponder in the key. Any help will be appreciated

If it helps the vehicle is a 2001 Town and Country LXI FWD 3.3L Flexfuel

Do you have Sentry-Key?
I think that's where the difference lies.

You can install it yourself but it will probably need to be programmed to the vehicle. I installed a "ready-to-go" kit in one and was able to move it 3 times before the immobilizer kicked in. Most high end locksmiths can cut and program the key out of their truck.

How can I tell if I have "sentry key". The car does have some kind of alarm system. If you lock the doors with the remote while inside the car and then open a door the alarm goes off. I have no idea if this would be connected with a starter disable though.

Well if it's anything like the '98 up Fords, you'll have to have the new key(that fits the new lock cylinder) programmed into the vehicles PCM or it isn't going to start...

Your best bet is to search the forums on your vehicle or just bite the bullet, take it to a locksmith and ask what has to be done plus the cost...

Sentry Key has a thicker gray head on the key, non transponder is just a black thin head. I don't think it makes a difference with the ignition cylinder - I think they are both the same.
