This time, it was the religious fantatics.

Where do I begin ...

These people think that one day the "saved"
people will be beamed up to heaven, and for
that purpose they made tapes for people who would
be left behind to face eternal ****ation

Do these people know that all organized religion
follow a pattern that enables control of the
masses by the few?

Do these people know that we're proving to be
as irrational as the fanatical Muslims?

Do these people know that the authors of Genesis
borrowed most of their stories from earlier
Mesopotamian civilizations?

Of course these people don't know. They are
conditioned to accept beliefs without
questioning. The mere act of asking "Why?" is
considered heretical.

We're better than this. We have to be better
than the fanatical Muslims that bombed us.

This time 60 minutes engaged in good
journalism. They let the idiots condemn
themselves with their own words.

The scary thing J is these people have control of the White House. They consider the war in Iraq as a religious war just as many Muslims do. If this political control continues don't be surprised if the Department of Homeland Securtiy sets up division for John Ashcroft's Morals Police to start arresting people for un-christian thoughts. I'd be careful about openly stating your opinion.

Jae, I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt, and say that the remarks in your original statement, goes against something outrageous shown on the show you watched, even though you did not describe it. If your "idiot" remarks, are simply directed at religious people in general, then you seriously need to check yourself,.........as that kind of statement would tell much more about you, than those you oppose............not to mention having the effect of both offending and alienating half of the members on this forum.

J - I don't understand your post. I didn't watch 60 minutes (I don't watch it anymore).

What was the point? To show that some religous group doesn't fit their view as normal? To say that religion is out to "get us"?

In my church it is NOT heretical to ask why.

If you are implying this is something generally practiced by Christians and that all Christian are wrong....but I just don't get your or the show's point????

This kind of stuff just feeds the minds of the paranoid...."morals police"...."these people have control of the White House".....wow, now THAT's out there....

That's pretty funny, since many of those same people cast aspersion on others who folllow what they consider to be wrong faiths.
Listening to these guys debate the tiny details of whether the entire body (with clothes? without?) will be resurrected on Judgement Day,makes me cringe. They will also laugh at Muslims or Hindus or even other Christians about some small detail of their doctrine without realizing they sound just as ridiculous.
As for taking offense, I'm offended by people who think they can better interpret the Bible, or anything else, than I can, or that they know what God wants more than anyone else knows.
Actually, I'm not offended by them thinking so, just by them acting on it.

Sorry about that.

However, it is wrong to make up stuff. So, I'm
calling the people who believe things without
ever questioning and at the same time make up
things which are not contained in scripture as
idiots.

The people who believe that they will be beamed
up say that all who are saved and children
under the age of twelve (or some such arbitrary
number) will be beamed up. I would like somebody
to show me the Biblical passage from which one
may deduce special treatment for children under
the age of twelve.

Also, original sin is a concept not found in the
Bible anywhere. Some dude made it up to tie up
a seeming loose-end (if one is born and never
sins, what happens to him)

So, religion is good, but not when people make
up stuff in real-time and believe what they just
made up plus all the stuff other people made up
over the centuries.

I believe in God. God is good. Pettiness is
not good. Vindictiveness is not good. So, God
is neither petty nor vindictive.

I didn't see the aforementioned 60 minutes program, but:

I think you have that reversed. Most civilizations based their creation stories on the Genesis record.

What Mesopotamian civilization had a Genesis story that pre-dated the Genesis record?

Yes indeed.
And one must always bear in mind the context the various parts of the bible were written in, and by who, as well as for who.

The story of Cain and Able, much more than just a tale of two brothers, is propoganda about two ways of life: Pastoralism and Agriculture.

I said in another post that I ahve not seen the verses that relate to 'The Rapture', and I'd like to, if anyone knows where they are.

Religion is good, but anybody who claims to have an inside line on it is a fool.

I don't know anything about the "original sin" concept.....unless you mean the first sin...which is supposedly pride.

I have never heard of an arbitrary age of 12 for anything........only the age of ascension (spelling?), meaning the age one knows right from wrong. No age is given in the bible, and therefore covers the baby thing, and well as mentally retarded, etc.

All the stuff about the coming judgement day and the rapture is in Revalation.

The story on 60 minutes wasn't about all of Christianity, just Evangelicalism. One of the guys they interviewed said outright that it is going to be cool, and awesome when it happens. What scares me as well, is in Revalation, they prophesize the rebuilding of Babylon. Some have said 9/11 is the beginning of the end! Makes me wonder even more why GWB went into Iraq, considering he's practically an Evangelical.

SBC, Evangelicals claim that everyone under 12 is covered so to speak. What about ancient tribes in Africa or South America/completely closed societies that haven't a clue who Jesus Christ is? What happens to them!

Pablo - It is not the least bit "out there" to say that the aforementioned people have control of the White House. Do some research on Christian Reconstructionism, George Bush and John Ashcroft.

Also do some research on the neo-conservative movement in connection with bush and ashcroft.

Drew.....I can't say. I don't attend church......never have. I have never read the bible. I defend religion, and quite frequently point out that, atheists and agnostics, have no more to back up their claims than religious people do. Unlike alot of members here, I respect people's religion, and try not to offend them (whenever possible), whether they be jewish, christian, catholic, hindu, etc, etc. Quite frankly, I don't think religion, should be discussed here, as the more I read the threads on religion, the more I lose respect for certain members of the forum......(I am sure that others could say the same of me). I do believe in god, but I am not any particular faith.

Mark, your remarks are in bad taste, to say the least.

I just think it's "out there" to think the folks in the White House are planning a division for morality police, truth squads, etc and that the whole Iraq war was about "taking back" Babylon, that's all.

Pablo - to that extent I probably more agree with you than not. But the whole Bush thing about believing that God put him where he is, and the fact that he doesn't seem to think he is accountable to any mortal, just scares the you-know-what out of me.

As far as taking back Babylon, when you follow the neocon trail you find a lot of info about establishing military bases in order to spread American power and economic system. When you peel back the layers the neocons admit pretty easily that it is all about imperialism, which Bush basically claims to be his literal God-given purpose.
