Icant believe that a guy could be this boneheaded

I'm a member of an antique truck forum. One guy lives in CT. He has a hard time finding non rusty parts there so he buys parts on Ebay or whatever here in Ca. I have been retrieving stuff he has bought and stored the parts untill we figure out shipping.

Some of this stuff is pretty large. Semi Truck fuel tanks, battery boxes etc. Stuff that would cost a fortune to ship 3000 miles.

It so happens that I had some friends going to the east coast from Ca. I got them to take a few large items. They were nice enough to do so and to even help me load the parts which are pretty heavy.

Sounds like a win win so far. They went as far as Virginia.

Now the guy in CT wont meet them and get his stuff. He expects them to drive the extra distance to hand deliver the stuff!

They said no to that. They want him to come get the stuff which I think is very fair. Now he wants them to haul it all back to Ca back to my place!

I said no way. IMO I'm feeling disrespected by this guy. I went out of my way to go get the stuff and my friends went out of there way to take it as close as possible to him for free.

I told the guy in CT and my friends that if he doesn't get the parts by the time they leave next week to find a place and leave them, tell him where they are and leave. Do not drag them back to Ca!

The guy in CT has a flexable schedule so thats not the issue. He's just too lazy to drive 4 hrs or so to get his parts.

Thoughts?

Tell both your CT and delivering friends that the pick up point should be the nearest truck recycler. The ultimate disposition of the parts will be between the customer and the yard.
 
Well, just leave them. he should be grateful you've already done all that for him, and even got it most of the way there- for free! Some people just can't help but be ungrateful and snobbish. As the old saying goes, "give them an inch, they take a mile"

I gotta ask... what dialog he had with you before hand that would have allowed such a lame notion to exist in his head?

It might have been different if he asked if they could arrange freight from their east coast location (way cheaper than CA) since he ran into something that makes picking it up impossible.

Chris: What type of leverage does he imagine he has in this whacked position he's taken? Do you make a whole lot off of him or something?
 
Sheesh. Just rent a Uhaul, and pick up the darned parts. Somebody was nice enough to get them across the country, driving that distance is a weekend. And far cheaper than shipping them.
 
I see this a lot these days - you go a certain distance for someone, and they 'assume' you are going to finish the job - it never crosses their mind that they will be asked to be a part of the process.

When the reality hits that they have to help out, they take it as an attack, and go on the defensive. I have no idea why this happens - I was always taught growing up never to assume anything, or take anything for granted - be ready to jump in and do your part.

If this had been me, I would have been thanking Chris 142 profusely, and saying 'okay, what can I do to help this process?' I don't know why no-one else does this.....

They do. You just never hear about the good things that people do. People usually only complain. (not talking about the OP. I'd be PO'd too!)
 
Wow. I'd do this.....get a quote from FedEx or UPS to have them shipped from Virginia to his place. This quote will also need to include all the boxing, containers, etc. etc. everything. Get that price and tell him that he must pay for it. If he says no, then tell him that you'll instruct your crew to go to the nearest metal recycler and turn it in as scrap metal and collect the cash and then don't ever order from me again. Business is one thing, but it's a two way street. You can't just please everybody and you have gone way FAR out of your way to help him out. If he's too stupid to realize that, then long range, your better off without him because this situation or something with similar consequences WILL HAPPEN AGAIN!!!!
 
I have had a few experiences selling or even giving away free that have soured me to it all.

I don't accept anything but cash or bank money order and make the buyer show up.

I recently had a woman show up expecting me to load a 600 lb free 1901 Wood Cookstove into her minivan. I clearly told her in an email to bring two really strong people or three average strength guys. She was upset as she drove 2 hrs to get it at me.

Maybe reading comprehension is not all there. She was fuming.
 
Well said! I must say though we are involuntarily encouraging stupidity/ignorance in this society.

Seen far too many of these stupidity going on.

Exactly. What's in it for you ( did you get paid to deliver the parts to CT) and was he aware of the delivery to Virginia?

Nothing. He did not buy the parts from me. He bought them online and I went and picked them up and have been storing them at my place untill a cheap and easy way to get the stuff across the country came up.

I drove 100+ miles 1way to get the fuel tank for him and I did it for free.
 
Something is missing here, he bought these parts online but from whom ? How did you get involve in this transaction ? Did he pay for shipping these heavy parts from CA to CT or it was stated online that free shipping for these parts ?
