blurring and obscuring the license plate when I reconsidered. At first, I was like, "everyone covers their plates when posting pics of their car, is that really necessary or just paranoia, I mean the most someone can do to prank you is to check to see if you have outstanding parking fines,"

but,

it occurred to me that a prankster can falsely report your plate for any number of offenses.

But, really?

Does the prankster need internet pics to do that? He can just go outside and prank any car.

So, please chime in. is it really necessary to obscure plates on car pics? Just to be safe, YES! Why not?

Blur them. We can't even imagine the stuff that happens on the net. Scams are being invented as we write this. And don't post any vin #s either.

I've never covered up my license on my vehicles or motorcycle and posted them. I have no idea why people almost always blur out or put tape over the numbers. I mean, we drive out in public everyday with the plate uncovered so what's the difference? On a bike forum I hade my motorcycle posted a few times and someone commented that I should not display my plate like I was. I asked why but didn't get a response. This was years ago, nothing happened. I don't get it. People will post their first and last names along with the town they live in and nobody says squat. But the license plate? They get all worried. Then, people will post all the vehicles they own too yr/make/model.

I never bothered covering the plate. Nothing ever happened in years of doing so. Frankly, im more worried about someone stealing it while at a store or something then anyone seeing it on the internet. Cant count how many people see it on the highways, around town, etc on a daily basis anyway.

If you give google a photo right now-- today-- it can "look through it" and match it to photos in its database.

Imagine ten years from now what it could do with your license plate.

Internet pranksters rarely go outside. By not blurring out any personal info on the web you are supplying malicious parties with low-hanging fruit.

I'm in the "it's already out there so who cares" camp. If I post a pic of my car and you go through the trouble of tracking down my home address so you can come and see the ever faithful "Bluesmobile," welcome - come on by and we'll share a cold one, If you, like Aqualung have "bad intent," you won't get a beer and you'll warm more than your feet in the bog.
