I want to install a shift kit in my tranny. This involves dropping the pan. How evil would it be to reuse the fluid that comes out?
It's brand new DEX 6 fluid with a $20 bottle of lube guard in it. If it can't be done I'll have to forget about the shift kit for now.

Anything you get in that pan will be boulder sized to the filter. Go for it.

If it were my garage I'd kick the dang thing over at just the wrong time.

There are several shift kits for these cars. I'm not sure which to go with. Transgo makes one. It has new springs and stuff that go in. The other ones available have shims instead of new springs.

Right on. Just making sure that it would be all good.

Is this for a 4T65E? I did the Trans Go... only did the springs for the shift quality and it works great! Easy to do too.

You could try and filter the fluid through coffee filters.
Slow, but it works pretty good. A filter in a funnel and pour through it.

Also, let it sit still for as long as you can in a very clean container. Sediment will settle -pour slowly and don't use that part [if any]. You may have to ad some fresh ATF.

Installed a kit last night. I cleaned my oil catch bin thingy and used it. I funneled it right back without filtering and left about half a quart in the pan, there was a bit of sediment that was likely on the pan and the fluid picked it up as it drained. Had about 1/4 quart in a container on the shelf so I added it and the fluid level is on par. I must have had it right full before because I spilled some to.

I found some info on the net and made my own kit with parts from lowes. Next year I plan on getting this transmission rebuilt and will go with the transgo for sure when that time comes. It works quite well. I love the snappy downshifts and it stil feels like a Buick.

Thanks for your help guys.

Pete, I did the Lowes shift kit at first. Ended up with a TransGo because the Lowes kit didn't correct the very weak OEM shift accumulator springs that caused my PCS to fritz out.

The 4T65-HD may have better springs than my plain-jane 4T65.
