My computer recently crashed. I have an Ipod shuffle and my son has a Touch. With the crash, my library of music was lost. Is there a way to restore my library? Can I reinstall I tunes and plug the ipod in to restore it? I haven't tried anything yet, because I don't want to loss the music on the Ipod. Ideas?

If you resync your Ipod, Itunes will erase all the music you have on it now and replace it with what's on your computer (nothing). This is probably not what you want.
Itunes has no provision to recover music files from an Ipod. However, there is third party software that is capable of pulling all your music back off the Ipod and putting it back into the Itunes library. Google is your friend; I had this happen to my daughter and the software cost around $20. Full recovery.

Yes you can copy songs from the Ipod back to your Itunes library. It is easy and free.. There is a really great free program called Sharepod that will do exactly what you need. Visit http://www.getsharepod.com/ and click on "download" and it is super easy to use, the program is only a few MB download, it is 100% free to use (the guy who maintains Sharepod does accept thank-you donations via Paypal if you are so inclined) and it is virus and scamware free too.
Sharepod is a great program. I have used it myself several times when I either had computer problems or problems with my Ipod. It saved me from losing my own 5,000+ song Itunes library. The only thing Sharepod can not do is it will not import your playlists, so you have to make those all over again and then add the albums or songs to their respective playlist, but the program is super easy to use and it has worked perfectly every time I have used it. You can also use the program to backup your Itunes to your computer's hard drive from the Ipod too. Sharepod is one of the very best pieces of freeware I have ever seen.

Some anti-virus/anti-spyware programs will mark this as a virus/spyware, but it isn't, it's a solid program that copies the music from your iPod back to your PC.

Even though I am a few days late with it I guess I should add that Sharepod may not transfer any DRM-encoded songs that were purchased from the Itunes store and synched to an Ipod back to the computer. However, you can download Itunes again on your computer, then go to the Itunes store and in the quick links list on the right side of the page there is a new function called "Purchased". You can click there and re-download songs that you previously purchased from the Itunes store, then Itunes will automatically build a "purchased" playlist in your library where it will store the purchased songs. Then you can transfer them to any playlist you like.
I recently had a problem with Itunes cutting off the last 30 to 45 seconds of some of the songs in my library. All of the songs that were cut short were songs I had purchased from the Itunes store, some I had bought 4 or 5 years ago. It was a total of about 60 songs that had the problem, and try as I might I was never able to fix them using Itunes and re-importing my library. I tried several fixes I read about online, nothing worked. I did use the "purchased" function at the Itunes store and restored about half of the songs back to normal operation. The rest I had to dig into my CD's and re-import back to Itunes. I learned long ago when I first started using Itunes that I need to always make a backup CD of any song I buy or import from borrowed CD's. I get a lot of free music from CD's I check out from the local libraries. The hard part of fixing the chopped-off songs was sifting through over 125 playlists to find the songs that were chopped off at the end. The whole project took me several hours a night for the last two nights but the good thing about it is I found some songs that I had purchased from Itunes several years ago but had deleted from one Ipod synch or another. It is good to have those songs back in my library again. The "purchased" playlist will also have any DRM-encoded songs you may have bought a few years ago listed too, but they should still play on your Itunes/Ipod without any problems.
