I still don't get why wheels are so big and the profiles of the tires are so low. Old man yelling at cloud

This for a turboed Suburu? four 245/50/20s, 1000 and change out the door.. How much clearance do the calipers have?. Where do you drive this rig that it requires such a big contact patch? If its a dedicated rally car. OK. If it is your daily driver, you are a drain bamaged victim of a ridiculous fashion craze. My driveway is through the Senior Ctr parking lot so I see all sorts of cars. I'm looking for a good used 4x4 pick up truck 1/2 ton. extend cab/6' bed. Several Dodges caught my eye, Wheel pkg is a deal breaker. 20" wheel 245 50. Rotors look like they'd clear a 16" wheel. Rant over

Agreed. Curmudgeon high fives all around.

You are totally entitled to that rant. You are right about things getting wild. Especially with new trucks. I can not fathom paying some of the prices I see for some new trucks and the tires (when replacements needed) even if I were filthy rich.

Agreed. It is ridiculous what they are putting on vehicles now. Mine came with 60 series 18's. I'd rather have 70 series 16's. I remember when 14's were the norm and 15's were large.
YES! I remember always going from 14' to 15's soon as I could on the muscle cars thinking that was big. Today....... your word says it , ridiculous. What is funny today is tires and rims worth more than the cars.

High hood lines for pedestrian collision safety means the fenders have to be big to look right meaning big tires & wheels.
Yeah looks right, most everything on the road should have 15” rims with more sidewall when needed.

Not sure how valid it is, but I’ve been told that low profile tyres have a lower rolling resistance and help manufacturers squeeze just that bit extra with their emissions targets. The guy was supposedly an engineer at one of the Aussie auto manufacturers before they all closed down.

I’ll also yell at some clouds and add that low profile tyres are for city boys.

My F-150 has 20” tires and wheels. I don’t consider them low profile. There’s plenty of tread wall height. The cost for replacement Michelin tires are way out of sight. I’ll probably replace with Falken or Cooper.
Our VW Tiguan has 17” wheels and tires. This is a perfect combination.

20s look gaudy on a car that small IMO, but I do think there is a balance. Cars with true sporting intentions need larger wheels to accommodate larger rotors.
But many don't have larger rotors, regardless of their "intentions". And are dishplate-sized, and larger, rotors needed on a daily driver. Perhaps they're part of a set with oversized spoilers ... 🤷‍♂️

I recognize that there are situations where the larger wheels are appropriate.
