...is death & destruction headed my way????

Cliff notes: '08 G5. There's a known issue with bad cylinders; but mine has been fine from new until today. Cylinder wouldn't budge from OFF position.

Got it to move one more time; then promptly removed the shroud & pulled the cylinder. Couldn't find anything wrong, so I wiped down the housing and doused the cylinder with Blaster DryLube.

Going to put it back together and say a prayer!

Make a habit of puffing graphite lick lube in every OCI as preventative maintenance.

My girlfriend's 09 G5 was covered by some ignition cylinder recall which rectified a condition where the vehicle could not be turned off. I wonder if the same recall applies for your 08 G5 and is related to the issue you had?

GMs and that dreaded "Security" light was a big problem for a longggg time.If the key wore or you quickly slid the key in "carelessly" you werent going anywhere.Chryslers had sticky tumblers that wouldnt allow the key to come out. That was a simple matter of spraying some sort of evaporating cleaner in occasionally.Fords, dont know what those lock cylinders do.

Good idea as this is rarely done.

Bad idea, as most automotive lock cylinders are lubricated with waterproof grease rather than graphite.

Lock deicer has a better chance of redistributing any remaining grease.

I got the special policy notice and yes, It's related to my issue. I thought the vehicle would need to be towed on Monday, but I kept working it & got lucky. If I'd seen damage when I removed the cylinder, I would've prepared to take it to the dealer. But I'm going to take a chance & see how some lube works...

I do know that in the 90s Mercedes Benz used to apply lithium great to the ignition cylinder. I worked at a dealer and used to get the cars off the car carrier and they mostly all had white lithium grease in the cylinders.

Graphite lube doesn't work in these locks. My 2003 Saturn had the same cheaply made ignition switch. It caused the switch to fail under warranty.

You end up having to buy the entire switch housing and new tumbler. I didn't have all the equipment to do this all myself, so I paid the Saturn dealer to do it. $500 for everything, it made me extremely angry, because many cars built decades before this didn't have that problem.

So I just don't put any lube in there, hopefully the next owner of the car doesn't have the same thing happen.

The Chevy HHR also has this junk key system.

You need to take it in anyway (if it's covered in the recall). I can't tell you how many of those things I've seen that "Look" fine, but wouldn't work for squat.
