I have a 98 K3500 with the 7.4L big block with 102,000 miles. The oil spec is for 5w30 which I have been running for the winter. I'm currently using Valvoline white bottle. I have already used around a quart in 2,000 miles and that is more than I like. I've not noticed any blue smoke and the tailpipe is clean as it can be.

Can anyone recommend a thicker conventional 5w30. Thanks.

Wayne

Are you willing to go synthetic? If so, German Castrol 0w30 will give you a, thick as it gets, 30 weight. Plus you can double your oil change interval since it meets all the Euro Long Life specs.

I highly doubt that another Xw-30 (even if slightly thicker) will make your oil consumption go away. Find the source of the leak or consumption.

I second the Valvoline suggestion....Valvoline MaxLife Blend or Full Syn. 5w30. Possibly you have some leaks and I know MaxLife will help in that area.

Is the Maxlife Blend generally considered the best HM oil? It gets talked about a lot on here.

its a big block, they will burn oil. its a fact of life based upon the actual size of the cylinders and build quality. my best friend has a 2004 8.1 chevy with 65,000 mi and it burns around a quart every oil change.

How cold is your area, I'd just run a 10w40, our commercial supplier has a mineral 10w40 with a -39c/-38f pour point, that will do a great job at reducing burn, IMO look for a 10w40

Thanks guys. The truck has no leaks. I replaced the valve cover gaskets last year which had been the source of a few leaks but they are sealed now.

Its been staying pretty close to 0* this winter for the lows with the highs staying in the 30*'s most of the time.

I have been thinking of going to a higher viscosity oil but didn't know if this engine would like a 10W-40 or not. I know the 396BB in my 70 Monte Carlo does but it has looser tolerances than this engine does. I will probably try the Maxlife blend first and see what happens. thanks again.

I would say that MaxLife is considered the best HM oil...

As would I, I have used it with good results.

Rotella T-Syn 5-40 performs like a "thick" 30 weight, is
very robust and reasonably priced. If price is no
object Redline 5w30 will behave like the heavyiest
40 weights.
