I must admit he was my idol for 2 years of my wasted life...

Sorry, Pablo, but I have hardly even heard of this guy. I am vainly familiar with some of his writing. I guess I spent most of my time watching The History Channel, A&E Channel, FOX News, TLC Channel, etc.

Probably true

...I suspect you are a bit younger than I....when Thompson was putting out his good stuff, there was no cable TV! The point is people can change for the better, he didn't and it tore him up.

I still laugh at some of the mental images he painted....needing a pair of golf shoes to walk through the bar because of the aligators feasting on the patrons....or "silence covered the room as if someone had let a shiit mist go....."

Sorry Pablo, that should have been 'vaguely familiar.' I in no way am trying to put down a guy who was a hero for you. But I really do not know a lot about this guy. Maybe he was a writer who could be compared with Hemmingway, I don't know. Hemingway was kind of a rebel also. Often great writers are complicated people. Frankly I was a kind of a rebel myself, but I didn't want to be a rebel without a cause. I was something of a rebel because I felt left out of the rest of society. Perhaps I should have become a writer myself-I always felt like something of a reporter or social observer.

I think Thompson was the writer of the '**** 's Angels,' wasn't he? In may be several years before he can be fairly judged as a writer and for all the other stuff he did.

Yes he wrote **** 's Angels (his worst book, IMHO). I thought he was cool, when I was 17-19 years old....but as I stated I grew up and moved on in a positive way.

I haven't seen his latest movie, but I saw the Bill Murray, "where the buffalo roam" one....not that funny...

NO way can his writing be called great or compared to the classics, but it was very readable and he had a style, that's for sure.

It doesn't matter where you live, although I infer that you're saying since he was rich he should have been happy.
You know as well as I do that money doesn't bring happiness. It can help a lot, I agree, but some of the emptiest people have some pretty fat bank accounts.
I'm not saying he was 'empty', but he must have struggled with something inside.

I was implying that it indeed, must have been horrible to live in Aspen for a person with Thompson's persona and view of life. Well, it probably gave him a lot of laughs

I got a kick outta the guy and for that I am thankful. His demons appeared to be legion and that was a shame. I never pitied him as he made his choices and would not want pity from anyone.

I wish him peace, for a change...

John.

Have you guys heard about his funeral? He wanted to be cremated (sp?) and shot out of a cannon. I didn't really know much about him before this but I've been reading a lot on the internet. He sounds like a comic genious! A local radio station is running a contest to see who would be the best paul bearers at his funeral. The names that are popping up are just a riot (Gordon Liddy
