So it was time to change the oil on the Porsche today... I had planned on using that new Mobil 1 5W40 "Truck and SUV" (yuck) as a change from the usual 15W50 I've been running, which I think is probably too thick for the engine, but my only other option has been a xW30. I knew the 5W40 existed, I'd just seen it in a Wal-Mart in Fair Lakes last week. But when I actually went to buy the stuff, you know, like near my house, I couldn't find ANYTHING. Finally at the very last store I checked (AutoZone) I found some 0W40 and used that instead.

The 0W40 seems to be working fine, despite pouring in like water. Engine actually feels smoother as well, although I wonder if some of that wasn't the 15W50 that was in there just getting old, because it did seem to get noticeably rougher just very recently (5K mile OCI)

Question: I'd like to have some of the 5W40 to try for my next OCI, but short of picking some up next time I'm in northern Virginia, is there some way that I could actually get some? Does anyone mail-order Mobil 1? I know I can order Amsoil, but I have to admit that I'm still way skeptical of them because of the whole API thing and also their marketing setup. Don't feel like paying the $$$$ for Redline...

oh yeah, sidebar question:

let's say for the sake of argument that I was unable to find any Mobil 1 except for the xW30s (which was the case for the most part; Pep Boys had the 15W50, and AutoZone had the 0W40.)

Which would have been the best choice?

-Mobil 1 10W30
-Rotella 15W40 (non-synthetic)

the FSM recommends a 40 or 50 weight oil in the temps we've been seeing here. Would using a synthetic make up for the ill effects of using the wrong viscosity, or would it be better to dump in some dino oil of the correct viscosity?

Yes, you can mail order M1 5w40. I won't post a direct link, but google search "avlube" or "av lubricants". You can get it from them.

IMHO, the M1 0w40 you're using will be just fine.

AVLube is a sponsor of BITOG and an excellent company to deal with. They can get any Mobil product that you need:

Well, you WANT the oil to pour like water !
0-40 is what my engineer brother runs in his Porshe [Boxter].
Why thicker when cold?
Answer: No advantage!

Thanks guys, will keep that link for my next OCI. (hopefully not soon - company car should be here)

Yeah, I don't have a problem with the weight of the 0W40, it's just hard to find *any* synth. that's not xW30 and I'd heard that the 5W40 had a better additive package than the 0W40...
