I signed up for a metal detecting class. We spent the morning listening to Boring speaches about the different types of metal detectors.

We learned that to find the good stuff you need a $700+ metal detector and a cheaper model simply wont do.

I was feeling a little let down about my cheaper one possibly being not up to par.

Later we went out in the desert to search for stuff that was placed, burried, hidden etc for us.

Guess who found one of 5 gold nuggets with a "Subpar" metal detector?

My dad is always metal detecting with his cheap, bottom-of-the-line metal detector and he's found hundreds of dollars worth of gold, coins, etc.

I think finding the neat stuff is going to be more regional. Not that you cant score money and jewelry lakeside or on the beach anywhere. However no musket balls in the high desert lol

I have wanted to buy a detector and go detecting ever since I was a kid. I will be 50 next year.

I work in a gold mining analysis lab. We flush gold (and platinum and palladium) down the sink every day. Quite small amounts, but I know at least one person who's "rescued" samples and collected them once we're done. Not usually as big as yours though. Nice find!

My school B/W photo lab had a silver recovery system in the fix bath. Just a wall-wart AC/DC converter that grew silver crystals on one of the terminals. The point was not so much the money as not polluting the sewer with metal discharge.

So Chris did you get to keep the gold? Wild that they plant the stuff for the class, must be confident they'll find it again. This sounds like the next fad for old geezers: treasure hunts with estate jewelry, like shooting deer in a fenced in pen, stocked fish ponds etc.

I can't justify a 700 dollar metal detector so I bought a cheaper Garrett model.
Now that my son is out of school, we are going to go down on my wife's old home place and look around some. Who knows what we may find around 140 year old home!

I had a customer come in today with pockets full of gold! Made me a little frustrated when I pulled mine out. Looks more like I have 1/4 of 1/4 oz or so.
