The answer to does the oil go through the filter or cooler first. I am into a Kohler Command Pro 27 CH 740 off an Exmark. Dissecting it shows that the oil goes through the cooler first. The outlet of the filter goes straight to the rear main bearing. The main has a t where oil goes forward to the front main and through the crankshaft to the rods. 90 degrees from the main galley, the oil heads up and to the cam bearing and through the cam to the other end. Oil continues up and around the breather box. There are holes here where oil is fed to the hydraulic lifters. All of the passages are fairly large, it would be difficult to plug one up.
