This. I owned a SAAB with the supposed "slugder" engine.
I used Mobil1 0w40 and changed it every 5000 miles. That engine was unbelievably clean. I could have probably changed it every 7500 miles without issue.
Working in a dealer, I can see how people can give cars a bad name. There are those select few that just will not bring their car in for service. Even when the light on the dash is on and there is a message in the message center that doesn't go away telling them to get their car serviced.
You got lucky. There are plenty of people who went by the book and had their oil changed by SAAB master mechanics whose first sign of trouble was a rod through the block.
